NARA Special List 44 inventories deck logs held for YMS-34 in TWO coverage blocks: 6/29/1942 - 12/31/1942 and 2/4/1943 - 10/5/1944 (p. 119). The first window opens two days after her 27 June 1942 commissioning; the second closes on 5 October 1944 - the exact day she transferred to France. These are log-coverage dates, not asserted commissioning/decommissioning dates. No log block is inventoried for January - early February 1943. YMS-34 does not appear on NARA's list of digitized deck logs in the National Archives Catalog (the digitized YMS entries are the hulls later named under the AMS/MSCO program); the logs are an undigitized primary record held in RG 24 at College Park.

    Limitations
Inventory listing only - establishes that deck logs exist and their date coverage, not their content. Log coverage is not proof of commissioning/decommissioning dates. The January-early February 1943 break in inventoried coverage is unexplained (unaccessioned span vs. out-of-service period cannot be distinguished from the inventory alone). The deck logs themselves are undigitized; no page-level content reviewed this session.

NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates generally track NVR-style data. The builder's production table lists YMS-34 as US Navy minesweeper, 278 tons, delivered 27-Jun-42, disposition 'To France 1944 as Anemone (D 311), decom. 1964'. The YMS type table carries the same row with naming detail: 'to France 1944 as D 311, renamed Anemone (D-25) 1947, M 665 1951'. The Hiltebrant yard was in operation in WWI and was still building minesweepers in the 1950s; it stood on the south side of Rondout Creek in Kingston between Spring Street and Plantasie Avenue (site of the present Rondout Yacht Basin). The same yard built the adjacent YMS block 32-37 (YMS-32 struck 1946; YMS-33 to the USSR 1945 as T-603; YMS-34, -36, -37 to France 1944; YMS-35 struck 1946) plus later YMS-195 through -206 and YMS-442 through -445.

Secondary compilations place this hull in the Mediterranean at Anzio: on 26 January 1944 HM LST-422 (British-manned, carrying the U.S. 83rd Chemical Mortar Battalion) drifted into a minefield off the Anzio anchorage in gale conditions, burned and broke in two; LCI-32 struck a mine and sank while assisting. The compiled accounts list 'the minesweepers USS Pilot, USS Strive, LST-16, YMS-34, YMS-43, and other YMS craft' as effecting the rescues - 150 survivors of LST-422 and LCI-32 pulled from storm-tossed water. The compilation quotes the YMS-43 war diary for that morning ('0700 Underway to pick up survivors... Survivors were drowning all around us while we were picking up some of their shipmates').

Attribution rests on secondary chain: the quoted primary document (YMS-43 war diary) documents the rescue but does not name YMS-34; the vessel list naming YMS-34 is the compiler's, and Wikipedia's LST-422 article cites the same compilation - not independent corroboration. Consistent with the hull's documented transfer to France (Med-sweeping YMS hulls were the transfer pool), and sister YMS-30 was mined off Anzio in 1944 - but no primary source naming YMS-34 at Anzio was directly verified this session.

Class context for this hull: 'The wood-hulled YMS proved to be one of the U.S. Navy's more durable and versatile types' - 561 yard minesweepers were built at 35 U.S. yacht yards (12 East Coast, 19 West Coast, 4 Great Lakes) beginning with YMS-1, laid down 4 March 1941 at Henry B. Nevins, Inc., City Island, NY. YMS-1 through -134 (which includes this hull) carried two stacks; YMS-135 through -445, 480 and 481 had one; YMS-446 through -479 had none. Records show YMS' were used to sweep mines laid by enemy submarines as early as 1942 off Jacksonville, FL and Charleston, SC. Surviving YMS were reclassified as AMS and given bird names in 1947 - YMS-34, in French service from October 1944, never re-entered the U.S. classification system.

    Finding
A wood-hulled, diesel-driven minesweeper delivered in June 1942 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. Era-standard applications on a small wooden diesel combatant of this type and period were diesel-exhaust and muffler lagging, engine-room thermal/acoustic insulation, machinery gaskets and valve packing, and electrical insulation. As a diesel craft she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply - and her wood hull and small machinery spaces imply a substantially smaller insulation footprint than a steam combatant. Her twenty-year second career under the French flag (1944-1964) extends the era context across two navies' maintenance regimes without adding hull-specific documentation.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, or work package located for YMS-34/Anémone in either navy's records. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity, no manufacturer attribution, no ship-proven presence. The small craft's reduced systems footprint makes the inference weaker than for steam-powered hulls of the same era; French-era modification records (1958 servitude conversion) exist only as plan-catalog entries, materials not described.

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - it is consistent with both genuinely light insulation fit and simple non-digitization of small-craft records (this hull's own logs are undigitized, and the French-archive trail exists only as a plan-catalog listing). Undigitized deck logs (RG 24), SHD Châtellerault plans, and builder records remain open leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
