[2]National Archives, Special List #44 - List of Logbooks of U.S. Navy Ships, Stations, and Miscellaneous Units, 1801-1947, ship-number ordering [other_primary]

- Special List #44 ship-number PDF, p. 119 (YMS-341: 12/11/1943 - 8/31/1945); digitization status per https://www.archives.gov/research/military/logbooks/navy-online

- Finding
- NARA Special List 44 inventories deck logs held for YMS-341 covering 12/11/1943 - 8/31/1945 (RG 24, Bureau of Naval Personnel records, National Archives at College Park). The coverage window opens on her completion/commissioning date (11 December 1943) and ends 31 August 1945 - sixteen days before she foundered in Typhoon Ida on 16 September 1945; these are log-coverage dates, not asserted commissioning/decommissioning dates. YMS-341 does not appear on NARA's list of digitized deck logs in the National Archives Catalog (the digitized YMS entries are the hulls later named under the AMS/MSCO program); the logs are an undigitized primary record of most of her commissioned career.

The final weeks of the ship's life (1-16 September 1945) are outside the inventoried coverage, and the logs themselves are undigitized; no page-level content reviewed this session.

[7]Westside Seattle (Robinson Newspapers), 'Minesweeper vet returns for a visit' (24 October 2006) - interview with Seattle Shipbuilding joiner foreman Clare Earl Johnson; reproduces a Stars and Stripes survivor account [reputable_press]
- Locator

- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- A yard-worker's firsthand account: Johnson supervised joiner work on 12 minesweepers at Seattle Shipbuilding 1941-44, including YMS-341 - oak frames steamed and bent, two layers of hull planking, christening ceremony. He encountered the ship again at the Guam naval operating base ship-repair yard where he was posted, when YMS-341 came in for minor repairs before departing for Okinawa. The article reproduces a contemporary Stars and Stripes account (T/4 Joseph C. Gusky) of the lone survivor, Lowell J. Bemis of Port Angeles, WA: sixty-foot waves hit YMS-341 on 17 September 1945; Bemis was swept overboard in Buckner Bay, fought sharks, adrift 56 hours, and swam ashore - the sole survivor of 33 men aboard.

- Limitations
- Local-press oral history: the construction and Guam details are one veteran's recollection 60+ years on, quoted as reported speech, not a documentary record. The Bemis account is a reproduced contemporary Stars and Stripes story (original clipping held by the interviewee, not independently retrieved). Corroborates DPAA's 33-aboard/1-survivor figures and the 17 September date variant. No asbestos or material content - though it documents wooden-hull construction trades at the yard.

Seattle Shipbuilding & Drydocking Co. was started by Fred Bianco in the 1930s at 2629 NW 54th Street, Ballard, and closed in the 1950s - distinct from the large Seattle yard that became Todd Seattle. - Finding
- Class context for this hull: 561 wood-hulled yard minesweepers were built at 35 U.S. yacht yards (12 East Coast, 19 West Coast, 4 Great Lakes) beginning with YMS-1, laid down 4 March 1941 at Henry B. Nevins, Inc., City Island, NY. YMS-135 through -445, 480 and 481 (which includes this hull) carried one stack. Class-level specifications on the index: length overall 136', extreme beam 24'6", displacement 320 tons, max draft 6'1", complement 33, one 3"/50 dual-purpose mount and two 20mm mounts, designed speed 12 knots, General Motors 8-268A diesel engines on two shafts, designed shaft horsepower 880. Surviving YMS were reclassified as AMS and given bird names in 1947 - YMS-341, lost in 1945, never received one.

[10]Era inference built on: NavSource class index (wood-hulled YMS type); NavSource/uboat.net hull data (two GM 8-268A diesels, reduction gear, two shafts - no steam plant); GAO HRD-80-2 Navy-wide asbestos-use documentation (ev-10) [other_primary]

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- A wood-hulled, diesel-driven minesweeper delivered in December 1943 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. Era-standard applications on a small wooden diesel combatant of this type and period were diesel-exhaust and muffler lagging, engine-room thermal/acoustic insulation, machinery gaskets and valve packing, and electrical insulation. As a diesel craft she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply - and her wood hull and small machinery spaces imply a substantially smaller insulation footprint than a steam combatant. Because the hull was lost in September 1945, the only conceivable exposure windows are her 1943 construction and her 21 months of wartime operation - there was no postwar overhaul, modernization, or abatement phase.

- Seattle Shipbuilding construction trades (1943); engine-room and maintenance crew (1943-45) - including the 32 men lost with the ship; Guam repair-yard personnel (veteran recollection); any in-theater trades during availabilities
- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, or work package located for YMS-341. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity, no manufacturer attribution, no ship-proven presence. The small craft's reduced systems footprint makes the inference weaker than for steam-powered hulls of the same era, and the sunken wreck forecloses any present-day exposure pathway.

All four CourtListener base queries (opinion and docket indexes, hull-number and exact-name variants) returned zero hits.
