Spec block: displacement 270 t., length 136', beam 24'6", draft 8', speed 15 kts., complement 32; armament one 3"/50 dual-purpose mount, two 20mm mounts, two depth-charge projectors; propulsion 'Two 880bhp General Motors 8-268A diesel engines, Snow and Knobstedt single reduction gear, two shafts.' Call sign Nan - Queen - Love - Oboe. Commanding officer: LTJG N. F. Murphy, USNR (1945). No photograph of this hull exists in the archive; 'There is no DANFS history available for YMS-342.'

NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation tracking NVR/DANFS data, not a primary registry - its milestone dates are consistent here with uboat.net and the builder's own hull table. Contains no asbestos or material content. 'Completed' is carried for the in-service date; uboat.net renders the same date as 'Commissioned.' Propulsion figure printed as '880bhp' - the class standard was 440 bhp per GM 8-268A engine (two shafts); likely a total or transcription figure (see gaps).

NARA Special List 44 inventories four deck logbooks for YMS-342: 'YMS-342 | Oct. 16, 1943-June 30, 1945 | 4' (logbooks held at the National Archives, covering commissioning day through mid-1945). The logbooks are the primary location/track record of her WWII service - daily positions, operations, personnel events - and confirm the hull's WWII Navy service within the 1930-1986 coverage window.

    crew (1943-45)
    Limitations
An inventory entry, not the logs themselves: SL44 establishes that four logbooks exist and their date span (16 Oct 1943 - 30 Jun 1945); it does not provide log contents. The inventory predates later accessions - her post-30 June 1945 service (Japan-area minesweeping Sep 1945 - Feb 1946 through stricken Aug 1946) falls outside SL44's coverage and those logs, if extant, sit in other accessions. Log coverage dates are not asserted commissioning/decommissioning dates. Scan verified via the ACPL mirror of the NARA publication; the archives.gov landing page is https://www.archives.gov/research/military/logbooks/special-list-44-named (batch lead cited PDF page 119 of the section PDF = printed p. 520).

Credits establish participation windows, not daily positions or what sweeping she performed; engagement-star windows are official credit dates, not necessarily continuous presence. Notably the manual credits NO Leyte landing star (P31-x) despite documented presence in Leyte Gulf 21 Oct 1944 (see ev-05) - the credit list stands as written; a boat can be present without earning a campaign credit. Contains no asbestos or material content. 1953 revision predates her 1948 destruction - no post-1953 amendments located for this hull.

The transcribed deck log of USS LST-125 places this hull in the Leyte Gulf transport area the morning after the A-Day landings: 'Saturday, 21 October 1944 ... 0944 USS YMS 342 came along starboard side for fuel and fesh [sic] water. ... 0959 YMS 342 left starboard side. 1003 USS YMS 71 left port side. The builder's hull table records this hull: US Navy minesweeper YMS-342, no official number (O/N) assigned, 278 tons (light displacement), 136 ft. LOA, delivered 16 Oct 1943, 'struck 1946.' Yard profile: Bellingham Marine Railway Co. was a boat-repair business from the early 20th century, became Bellingham Marine Railway and Boatbuilding Co. in 1921 (new facility on the Whatcom Creek waterway at Squalicum Creek, ~48.752 N -122.488 W), merged with Bellingham Iron Works in 1941 to form Bellingham Shipyards, renamed Bellingham Marine post-war, closed 1963. Wartime output at the yard included BYMS-17 through -20 for the Royal Navy, YMS-269 through -276, YMS-342 through -345, YMS-410 through -413, PCS-1461 through -1465, and ATR-68 through -73.

Independent secondary compilation of yard records - consistent with NavSource/uboat.net on dates (delivered = completed/commissioned 16 Oct 1943). The 278 t. figure is light displacement vs NavSource's 270 t. spec - both carried, not reconciled. Yard naming: the company was legally Bellingham Shipyards post-1941 merger but Navy-era records and NavSource carry 'Bellingham Marine Railway and Boat Building Co.' - both names refer to the same Bellingham, WA yard. A wooden-hulled diesel-powered minesweeper built in 1943 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos era, but materially outside the steam-plant pathway: with no boilers or turbines, the boiler/steam-line lagging load of larger combatants does not apply. Era-standard asbestos-relevant applications aboard small diesel craft of the period were concentrated in the machinery space - diesel-engine and exhaust lagging, machinery gaskets and valve packing, electrical cable insulation, fireproof paneling (asbestos-cement board of the Marinite type was the era-standard joiner/fire material), and friction linings on the minesweep winch and capstan gear - at reduced scale relative to steam ships.
