[2]National Archives, Special List #44 by Ship Numbers (deck-log inventory of U.S. Navy ships, stations, and units) - YMS-345 entry [other_primary]
- Locator
- sl-44-ship-number.pdf, PDF page 119, YMS-345 row
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA's Special List #44 ship-number inventory lists deck logs for YMS-345 covering 12/11/1943 - 6/30/1945 - a coverage window beginning on the vessel's completion/commissioning date and documenting WWII Navy service within the 1930-1986 exposure window. The listed window ends mid-1945 even though award data shows the vessel operating into March 1946; the post-6/30/1945 logs are not in this inventory listing.

- Inventories logbooks held in NARA textual custody - it is a holdings list, not the logs themselves, and asserts nothing about contents. Date range is log coverage, not asserted commissioning/decommissioning dates. Post-June-1945 logs (if extant) are not shown in this inventory. - Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestones generally track NVR/DANFS-era records but 'completed' here is rendered 'commissioned' in other secondary sources (see gaps). No asbestos content. 'Fate unknown' means the post-FLC disposition is undocumented in public sources.

- Finding
- uboat.net's warship record for this hull corroborates: built by Bellingham Marine Railway and Boatbuilding Co. (Bellingham, Washington); ordered 13 April 1942; laid down 6 April 1943; launched 14 August 1943; commissioned 11 December 1943; stricken 3 July 1946. [5]Shipbuilding History (njscuba.net), Bellingham Marine yard page - yard history and vessel delivery table [other_primary]
- Locator
- Bellingham yard page, 'Bellingham Marine - Bellingham WA' history paragraph and delivery-table row for YMS-345
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- The yard's delivery table lists YMS-345: US Navy minesweeper, 278 tons, 136 ft, delivered 11 December 1943, 'struck 1946' - corroborating the builder, tonnage, length, and completion date. The yard history states Bellingham Marine Railway Co. was a boat-repair business dating to the early 20th century that became Bellingham Marine Railway and Boatbuilding Co. in 1921 (new facility on Squalicum Creek), merged with Bellingham Iron Works in 1941 to become Bellingham Shipyards, was renamed Bellingham Marine after the war, and closed in 1963. Sibling YMS hulls built at the same yard include YMS-269 through YMS-276 and YMS-342 through YMS-345.

- Limitations
- Secondary reference compilation (shipbuildinghistory/njscuba, the Colton shipbuilding tables) - consistent with NavSource/uboat on milestones but not a primary registry; the 278-ton figure conflicts with NavSource's 270 t (see gaps). The 1941 merger means the contract name on secondary lists can appear as either 'Bellingham Marine Railway and Boatbuilding' or 'Bellingham Shipyards'. No asbestos content.

[6]Shipbuilding History (njscuba.net), 'Yard Minesweepers (YMS)' class production page [other_primary]
- Locator
- Yard Minesweepers page, narrative paragraph above the delivery table
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- Class production context: in the three-year period spring 1942 through spring 1945, 35 boatyards turned out 561 wooden-hulled minesweepers of essentially the same design - 136 feet long, speed 13 knots - with the Mk. I (YMS-1-135, BYMS-1-30) carrying two stacks, the Mk. II (YMS-135-445, BYMS-31-80) one stack, and the Mk. III (YMS-446-481) none. 150 boats went directly to the Royal Navy, 30 to the Free French, 45 to the Soviet Union in 1945. YMS-345 falls in the Mk. II / YMS-135 single-stack subclass.

- Finding
- Official award-table data credits YMS-345 with: assault and occupation of Iwo Jima, 17 February - 16 March 1945 (code P33-1); and post-surrender Minesweeping Operations Pacific entries - Fukuoka (Kyushu-Korea Area) 9-28 November 1945 (P207-18), Kobe (Honshu Area) 18 December 1945 - 2 March 1946 (P207-9), and Yangtze River Approaches 22 February - 2 March 1946 (P207-28). These place the hull in Japanese and Chinese-coastal waters through early March 1946, roughly twelve weeks before the Foreign Liquidation Commission transfer.

- asbestos_application
- Finding
- A wooden-hulled diesel motor minesweeper built in 1943 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a small diesel vessel of this type and period were exhaust and machinery lagging, gaskets, valve packing, electrical insulation, and accommodation/galley insulation. As a diesel vessel she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply - and the wooden hull and small machinery spaces bound the plausible material scope.

- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO documented the Navy's asbestos posture for this hull's era: per the Navy's own statement to GAO, 'all ships contain some asbestos in such components as clutches and electric cables' and 'all ships presently in service contain some quantity of asbestos'; 'thermal insulation for machinery, equipment and piping systems has been the major application of asbestos,' with additional shipboard uses in deck tiling, electric cabling, galley ranges, piping-system gaskets and packing, and equipment brakes and clutches. Navy insulation product specifications were changed to call for asbestos-free materials by late 1973, yet ships already under construction continued to be delivered with asbestos insulation as late as May 1978. The report reviewed Navy worker-protection efforts at Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards.

- Finding type

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or qualifying litigation naming USS YMS-345 (YMS-345) was found in the public sources searched. All four CourtListener base queries returned zero results: "USS YMS-345" and "YMS-345" in both the opinion (type=o) and docket (type=r) indexes. The only 'asbestos aboard' content surfaced is law-firm/aggregator material asserting asbestos without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy.

- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard. Deck logs for this hull exist at NARA Archives II (per Special List #44) but are not digitized; builder work papers and the FLC sale file are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
