    Finding
The official U.S. Navy mine-warfare history narrates YMS-351's Normandy operation by hull number: the YMS group sailed from Plymouth the evening of 3 June 1944; during the storm crossing, sister YMS-349 rescued the crew of the storm-damaged British LCT-2498 (delivering 49 survivors to Portland) and YMS-351 sank the derelict by gunfire; at 0100 on 6 June the YMSs began sweeping boat lanes 15 miles off the Normandy coast; at 0330, three miles off Omaha Beach, they swept toward St-Vaast within a mile of the German batteries on the St. Marcouf islands and came under shore-battery fire (a near-miss cost YMS-380 her sweep gear); by 0730 the group was on patrol stations.

Yard history: Gibbs Gas Engine Works founded 1911, prolific builder of gas engines and small wooden and steel vessels; renamed Gibbs Corporation after WWII; sold to Aerojet-General in 1964; folded into Jacksonville Shipyards with Rawls Brothers and Bellinger yards in 1969; sold to Fruehauf 1969; closed 1992 under Terex. Yard hull list corroborates: 'YMS 351 | US Navy | Minesweeper | 320d | 136 | 9-Oct-43 | Sold 1947'.

    Limitations
Yard-level and corporate-lineage context. The Jacksonville Shipyards asbestos-litigation cluster belongs to the post-1969 successor company, decades after this hull's 1942-43 construction - the lineage does not document conditions at Gibbs Gas Engine in 1942-43 and is carried only as context. Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
YMS-351 was a wooden-hulled, diesel-propelled minesweeper with no boilers or steam plant, so the asbestos footprint would have been far smaller than a steam-driven vessel's. Era-standard applications on 1940s diesel craft included engine exhaust and muffler lagging, machinery gaskets and valve packing, electrical insulation, and incidental insulation materials; WWII-era shipbuilding coincided with federal reservation of asbestos supply for military construction.
