- The ship's own Tarakan action report (YMS-364/A16-3, Serial 225-45, 10 May 1945, CONFIDENTIAL, signed C.K. Soper, Lt.(D), USNR): on 2 May 1945 at ~1530-1535 Item, in magnetic-sweep formation astern of YMS-340 off Cape Djoeata within 1000 yards of the beach, the ship came under enemy shore-battery and machine-gun fire and was hit several times. One shell ricocheted off a port bulwark stanchion, cut through the wardroom at the junction with the junior officer's stateroom, tore through the forward bookshelf and the pilot-house voice tube, passed into the galley closet over the sink, and dropped into the sink unexploded - later picked up and thrown overboard; other hits carried away the main radio antenna and shredded the flag bag and signal flags. Shrapnel wounded signalman Victor Paul Schiers (620 23 08, V-6, USNR) in the right calf; he was treated and transferred to USS Rocky Mount (AGC-3); no other personnel casualties; the ship fired no shots. Enclosure (B) Battle Damage Report itemizes superstructure-only damage (port screen door splintered, gunwhale punctured between frames 47-48, wardroom bulkheads pierced, galley closet door splintered, antennas carried away - repaired by ship's force) with repairs to the structural items 'currently under repair by U.S.S. CULEBRA ISLAND (ARG-7)'. The report recommends two crewmen (CBM James Edward Mitchell and MoMM1c Francis LeRoy Smith) for the Bronze Star for slipping the magnetic tail under fire and jettisoning the lodged shell.

- The ship's own Balikpapan action report (YMS-364/A16-3, Serial 252-45, 2 July 1945, CONFIDENTIAL, signed C.K. Soper): departed Morotai 11 June 1945 in echelon O2-A with USS Smith (DD-378) as OTC and fifteen other YMSs; swept daily from 15 June. 17 June: enemy aircraft dropped about eight bombs near the ship, no damage. 21-22 June: took in tow disabled PBY-107 of the RAAF 113th Air Sea Rescue unit; the flying boat nosed over and sank on the 22nd; ten survivors delivered to USS Montpelier (CL-57). 23 June, 1000 Item: on a northerly heading, enemy beach guns (two, possibly three) hit the ship with the fourth salvo - a projectile believed to be a 3-inch AA round struck at the pilothouse port wing, passed through the charthouse into the wardroom and lodged unexploded under the commanding officer's bunk, its fuse knocked off at the port rail; the round was jettisoned and the ship returned five rounds of 3"/50 AA fire. Four crewmen 'nervously uncontrolled' were transferred to USS Chepachet (AO-78) on recommendation of a medical officer from USS Sentry (AM-299). 26 June, 1425: USS YMS-365 detonated a mine directly beneath her about 1,000 yards ahead; YMS-364 slipped her gear, was alongside at 1445, and took off all personnel including the ship's dog from the sunken bow as the forward half of YMS-365 rolled against her; survivors delivered to USS Columbia (CL-56). 28 June: while assisting YMS-49 towing the mined YMS-47 and ferrying Dr. R.C. Hammond to YMS-366, the ship damaged her port-side forecastle. Ordnance expended: 5 rounds 3"/50 AA, 750 rounds .50 cal MG, 100 rounds 20mm; gear lost: four complete sets of moored gear and two magnetic cables. Enclosure battle-damage report itemizes: railings and gunwhales cut and split; forecastle port side raised; bulkhead, port wing, bridge punctured; charthouse desk splintered; 4"x14" hole in charthouse deck; wardroom overhead beams 41 and 42 splintered; 7"x10" hole in after wardroom bulkhead; navigation equipment broken.

- Finding
- The Wheeler Whitestone yard table lists 'YMS 364 | US Navy | Minesweeper | 278 [LDT] | 136 [ft] | 21-Aug-43 [delivery] | Struck 1946' - corroborating the builder, tonnage, length, and 21 August 1943 completion/delivery. The 'Struck 1946' disposition conflicts with NavSource/uboat.net's 12 March 1948 Naval Register striking and the 3 June 1948 Foreign Liquidation Commission transfer; sister Wheeler hulls in the same table carry the same 'Struck 1946' pattern (e.g., YMS 366). Yard context: Wheeler Shipbuilding Corp. was the company's second yard at Whitestone NY, opened for WWII minesweeper construction, later building tugs and coastal freighters; the company closed in 1948.

- A wooden-hulled diesel-powered motor minesweeper built 1942-43 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a small diesel combatant of this type and period were exhaust-system lagging, machinery and engine gaskets, valve packing, electrical insulation, and brake linings on winch and sweep gear. As a diesel vessel she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply - and her wooden hull lacked the pipe runs and hull insulation typical of steel steam ships, narrowing (not eliminating) the era-typical asbestos applications. Notably, her action reports show shells and fragments penetrating joiner-work bulkheads and lodging in furniture - a combat-damage pathway to interior materials that on a steam ship could disturb lagging, but on this wooden diesel boat involved woodwork and fittings.

- CORRECTION: PacificWrecks asserts 'Sunk on May 1, 1945 by a Japanese coastal defense gun off Tarakan on Borneo.' This is wrong on both counts and apparently conflates this hull's 2 May damage with the actual sinking of sister YMS-481 in the same action. YMS-364's own action reports and the operational record show she was damaged (not sunk) on 2 May 1945, continued in service - hit again off Balikpapan 23 June 1945, rescued YMS-365's crew 26 June - swept postwar minefields in October-November 1945, was photographed at Olongapo 6 May 1946, and was sold via the Foreign Liquidation Commission 3 June 1948. Fate unknown thereafter, but she demonstrably was not sunk at Tarakan.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS YMS-364 was found in the public sources searched. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no hull-naming asbestos content at all - only generic minesweeper marketing listicles (which name no individual hull). No asbestos documentation was located for the builder yard either (Wheeler Shipbuilding Corp., Whitestone NY). CAVEAT: CourtListener could not be queried this session - the authenticated fleet helper reported the shared ~58/hr pacing budget spent across repeated attempts; logged as blocked in search_ledger, not as a negative result.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard. CourtListener status this session is recorded in search_ledger; the deck logs (NARA, undigitized), Wheeler work packages, the ship's own digitized reports (which detail battle damage but not materials), and Foreign Liquidation Commission disposal records are open leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
