- Documented for this hull: launched as YMS-371, 27 November 1943, by Weaver Shipyards, Orange, Tex.; commissioned 29 February 1944, Lt. J. L. Grace in command. Operated in the Gulf of Mexico until summer 1945, transited the Panama Canal en route to Okinawa, arrived 5 July to begin minesweeping; departed Okinawa 17 August for Japan to sweep mines in Tokyo Bay, around Honshu, and at Sasebo. Ended occupation duties 16 February 1946, arrived San Pedro, Calif., 4 April. On 7 February 1947 named Hornbill and reclassified AMS-19. Training ship on the West Coast and at Pearl Harbor until 1953, then duty with the U.S. Naval Schools of Mine Warfare, Yorktown, Va. Reclassified MSC(O)-19 on 17 February 1955; decommissioned September 1957; struck from the Naval Register 1 November 1959; sold 30 June 1960. Earned two battle stars for World War II. Spec block: dp. 270; l. 136'; b. 25'; s. 15 k.

- NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates generally track DANFS/NVR but conflicts exist on three items (1947 naming date, 1955 reclassification date, 1960 vs 1961 sale; see gaps). - Finding
- NARA's own inventory lists TWO logbook segments for YMS-371 in RG 24 (Bureau of Naval Personnel records, Entry 118): 10/1/1943-12/31/1943 and 3/7/1944-6/30/1945. The first segment covers the pre-commissioning fitting-out period (she was launched 27 November 1943); the second begins one week after commissioning (29 February 1944) and runs through mid-1945, covering the Gulf of Mexico period and the start of the Pacific transit. The batch prompt cited only the first segment; the second is documented here.

- Fitting-out period workers and pre-commissioning detail (Oct-Dec 1943); commissioned crew (Mar 1944-Jun 1945)
- Limitations
- Archival lead only: SL44 is an inventory of physical logbooks, not digitized content - log text was not examined and these logs are not in NARA's online deck-log collections. Inventory coverage proves logs exist; it establishes nothing about their contents. Segments end 6/30/1945 - the Okinawa/Japan sweep, occupation duty, and entire Hornbill/AMS-19 era fall outside this inventory (post-1945 logs are a different custody series).

- Finding

The page's bracketed-name footnote - 'Numbered ships named and reclassified in 1947' - links YMS-371 to her later name Hornbill (AMS-19), confirming the designation crosswalk on an official source.

- Locator
- NavSource YMS index 11/19idx.htm, class-history narrative
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- Class context for this hull's type: the YMS 'Yard minesweeper' was a wood-hulled design (YMS-1 laid down 4 March 1941 at Henry B. Nevins Shipyard, City Island, NY); 561 hulls were built at 35 small yacht yards rather than major shipyards (481 U.S. Navy hulls plus 80 BYMS Lend-Lease builds); YMS-135 through YMS-445 and YMS-480/481 carried a single stack (the visual subclass containing YMS-371). Surviving YMS hulls were reclassified AMS and named in 1947, redesignated MSC(O) in 1955. Seven U.S. YMS were sunk in the 9 October 1945 typhoon off Okinawa - waters this hull had swept from July 1945.

- Limitations
- Program-level documentation; supports era context only, not any fact specific to this hull. A wood-hulled diesel minesweeper carried far less insulation scope than steam combatants - the report does not address material distribution by vessel type. [9]Era inference built on: DANFS spec block and NavSource specifications (diesel propulsion, small wooden combatant); NavSource YMS class index (wood-hulled type built at yacht yards); GAO HRD-80-2 era documentation (see ev-07) [other_primary]

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- A wood-hulled diesel-driven YMS-1-class minesweeper built 1942-44 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a small diesel combatant of this type and period were diesel exhaust lagging, machinery gaskets and valve packing, electrical insulation, and brake linings on sweep winch and windlass. She carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply, and the wooden hull carried materially less insulation scope than a steel combatant.

- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, or work package located for YMS-371. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity. Product names are normalized era terms; no manufacturer attribution for this hull. No authoritative asbestos documentation exists for the builder yard (Weaver Shipyards) - unlike the NIOSH-documented yards, the yard-level pathway is undocumented here.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming YMS-371 / Hornbill (AMS-19 / MSC(O)-19) was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CAVEAT: CourtListener could not be queried this session - the fleet-wide pacing budget was saturated by concurrent sessions for the entire window (7 spaced attempts, exit-2 'pacing budget spent'), logged as blocked in search_ledger, not as a negative result. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case; the only 'asbestos aboard' material is law-firm marketing content asserting asbestos without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy. No authoritative asbestos-use documentation was located for the builder, Weaver Shipyards (Orange, TX).

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era-consistent inference remains reasonable but unproven. The litigation repository search is a genuine open gap (fleet pacing saturation, never run) - not a negative result. Deck logs (RG 24, two segments) and any Navy disposal/transfer work papers are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
