Documented for this hull: laid down 28 December 1942 by Weaver Shipyards, Orange, TX; launched 29 January 1944; completed 28 April 1944; commissioned USS YMS-373 on 29 April 1944. Naval Vessel Register of 1 January 1949 lists plan for decommissioning and placing in reserve at San Diego, CA as February 1947. Named Jackdaw and reclassified Motor Minesweeper AMS-21 on 18 February 1947 (DANFS gives 17 February - see gaps). Reclassified Coastal Minesweeper (Old) MSC(O)-21 on 7 February 1955. Struck from the Naval Register 1 January 1960; transferred to Brazil 18 January 1960 and renamed Jurva (M-13). Specifications: 270 t., 136' x 24'6" x 8', 15 kts, complement 32; one 3"/50 DP mount, two 20mm mounts, two depth charge projectors (1947 fit: one 40mm, two twin .50 cal); two 880 bhp General Motors 8-268A diesels on Snow and Knobstedt single-reduction gear, two shafts. Photographic record: 16 May 1944 in the Gulf of Mexico from a ZP-22 blimp out of NAS Houma, LA (NARA photos 80-G-271210/271211); circa 1945 in San Francisco Bay; 16 April 1951 off Long Beach, CA (NH 93271). Postwar commanding officers: LT D. Ditzler (1950-Jan 1952), LT T. J. Murphy (Jan-Dec 1952), LT John Rives Crumpton Jr. (Dec 1952-1954).

    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry; milestone dates generally track NVR/DANFS but conflict with other sources on three points (launch date, naming date, Brazilian strike date - see gaps). No asbestos content. The 1 Jan 1949 NVR note records reserve status at San Diego as of February 1947 but does not give a decommissioning date; whether the ship recommissioned by 1950 is inferred from the commanding-officer list.

    Finding
DANFS entry (complete): 'Jackdaw - A common crow-like bird, easy to tame, that is noted for pilfering small articles. YMS-373, commissioned 29 April 1944 (q.v.), was re-classified AMS-21 and given the name Jackdaw 17 February 1947.' The entry also lists the two cancelled Admirable-class hulls of the same name: Jackdaw (AM-368, Puget Sound & Dredging, cancelled 6 June 1944) and Jackdaw (AM-402, Defoe Shipbuilding, cancelled 12 August 1945). Hazegray's DANFS transcription carries a transcriber's note: 'Jackdaw was struck from the Navy List 1 January 1960 and transferred to Mexico as Jurua January 1963' - 'Mexico' is a transcription error (all other sources, including the Brazilian NGB record, give Brazil; the January 1963 date is her Brazilian Navy incorporation date).

DANFS coverage is minimal (two sentences) and contains no asbestos or material content. Live NHHC DANFS page returned 404 on 2026-10-04; the Wayback capture (30 Sep 2022) of the NHHC page is cited. The hazegray transcriber's note errs on the recipient country (Mexico); Brazil is corroborated by NavSource, shipbuildinghistory, and the Brazilian NGB record - carried as a documented conflict/correction, not silently resolved.

    Finding
NARA Special List 44 inventories US Navy deck logs for YMS-373 covering 29 April 1944 - 29 June 1945 (PDF page 120). The coverage window begins on her commissioning date and spans her entire documented combat period, including the August-September 1944 Southern France sweep period. The logs are paper holdings at the National Archives; YMS-373/Jackdaw does not appear on NARA's 'Navy Deck Logs Available in the National Archives Catalog' digitized-logs page, so these logs are not digitized publicly.

    Limitations
Inventory coverage, not log content: SL44 records that logs exist for these dates; it does not establish what the logs contain, and the 29 June 1945 end date is the extent of the accessioned inventory - postwar logs (1945-1960) and the earlier accession's continuation are not ruled out. Commissioning/decommissioning dates are not asserted by this inventory. No asbestos content.

    vessel_history
    Finding
YMS-373 is credited with one WWII battle star: campaign E7, 'Invasion of Southern France,' 20 August - 23 September 1944 (Operation Dragoon). The Brazilian NGB record independently corroborates combat service in France: 'during the 2nd World War [she] participated in the invasion of France, receiving the Combat Medal with one star.' Her presence in the Gulf of Mexico 16 May 1944 (shakedown-era NARA photo) and the deck-log window through June 1945 bracket a transit to the Mediterranean within weeks of her 29 April 1944 commissioning.

    Limitations
The cited list is a commercial-vendor reproduction of the official Navy battle-star compilation, not the primary document itself - verification_status is partial accordingly, though the NGB Brazilian record independently corroborates one battle star for the invasion of France. Establishes campaign participation, not any detail of operations; the ship's own deck logs (NARA, undigitized) are the underlying primary source.

Brazilian-service record for ex-Jackdaw: built at Weaver Shipyards, Orange, TX; launched 29 January 1944; incorporated into the USN 29 April 1944; struck from the USN list 1 January 1960; transferred to Brazil 18 January 1960 and formally incorporated into the Marinha do Brasil 18 January 1963 as Navio Varredor Juruá (M-13), fourth Brazilian ship of the name. Arrived Rio de Janeiro 6 August 1963 after an 8,494-mile, 40-day passage; served with the 1st Minesweeper Division, Força de Minagem e Varredura (DRAGÃO and UNITAS exercises, Guanabara Bay patrols, hydrographic escort, salvage duty, merchant-marine officer training); moved with the force to Base Naval de Aratu, Salvador, 7 March 1971; reclassified Navio Auxiliar U-19 on 26 July 1974 (Grupamento Naval do Leste, 2nd Naval District); decommissioned 25 May 1982 at Aratu in a joint ceremony with NAux Javari under Aviso of 17 February 1982. Brazilian-era fit: SPS-10 surface-search radar, AN/QUS-1B minehunting sonar, two twin 20mm Oerlikon Mk 12 mounts; crew 33 (4 officers, 29 enlisted).

    Limitations
Resolves two circulating errors: NavSource's 'struck from the Brazilian Navy list in 1969' is contradicted by NGB's documented 25 May 1982 decommissioning ceremony, and the hazegray DANFS transcriber's 'Mexico' is an error - NGB documents Brazil. NGB is a serious but secondary Brazilian compilation citing ministerial notices (Avisos) and SDGM journals rather than the notices themselves. The 1960 transfer / 1963 incorporation gap (three years between US transfer and MB incorporation) is explained by the record as written; final disposal after 1982 is not documented. No asbestos content.

    Finding
Builder documentation: Weaver Shipyards, Orange, TX (Joseph Weaver and Son, est. 1897; renamed Weaver Shipyards on L. E. Weaver's death in 1941) was a small repair yard that took 1941-42 Navy contracts for wooden minesweepers and subchasers - the yard's WWII production was wood-hulled minecraft. Its build table lists YMS 373, US Navy, minesweeper, 278 GT, delivered 28 April 1944, 'reclassified 1947 as Jackdaw (AMS 21), to Brazil 1960 as Jurua (M 13).' Confirms wooden-hull construction of this class at this yard.

    Finding
A wooden-hulled diesel motor minesweeper built 1942-44 for WWII service sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era, but this hull type had a far smaller asbestos footprint than steam vessels: no boilers, no turbines, no steam piping to lag. Era-standard applications aboard a 1944 motor minesweeper were diesel-exhaust lagging, machinery and piping gaskets, valve packing, electrical insulation, and possible asbestos-content sheet/panel material (e.g., engine-room fireproofing and switchboard backing) - all inside a confined 136-foot wood hull where the 32-man crew lived and worked in close proximity to the machinery space.

Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, or work package located for YMS-373/Jackdaw. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials; no quantity. The wooden hull and diesel plant make the exposure pathway materially narrower than for steam vessels - the inference should not be inflated to a steam-ship-level finding.
