- Finding
- DANFS entry 'Lark II (YMS-376)' documents the hull's full U.S. Navy career: laid down by Greenport Basin and Construction Co., Greenport, Long Island, N.Y., 5 January 1943; launched 13 March 1943; commissioned at New York City 10 August 1943, Lt. (jg) J. O. Wilson in command. 1943-44: swept approaches and reaches of New York harbor plus periodic coastal ASW from New Jersey to Virginia and into Chesapeake Bay. Departed New York 16 March 1945 for Pacific duty; via Pearl Harbor, Johnston Island, Eniwetok reached Guam 24 May; as a unit of MinRon 104 arrived Okinawa 26 June and swept Japanese mines for the rest of the war. Post-surrender steamed to Japan 8-10 September, swept coastal mines out of Sasebo, and over five months cleared mines off Honshu, Kyushu, and in the Inland Sea. Departed Kobe 16 February 1946; San Francisco 1 April; San Diego 9 April; decommissioned there 5 June 1946 into the Pacific Reserve Fleet. Named Lark and reclassified AMS-23 17 February 1947 while in reserve. Recommissioned at Alameda 8 November 1950 (Lt. (jg) E. W. Anderson); MinRon 5, San Diego 26 November; homeport change to Long Beach 11 January 1951; departed Long Beach 6 July 1952 for Astoria, Oregon (arrived 29 July). Decommissioned 13 November 1953 into Pacific Reserve Fleet; reclassified MSC(O)-23 on 7 February 1955; transferred to Japan 14 February 1959 under the Military Assistance Program, serving the JMSDF as Ninoshima (MSC-662) until struck in 1967. Three battle stars for World War II service. Spec line: dp. 270; l. 136'; b. 25'; dr. 8'; s. 15 k.; cpl. 32; a. 1 3", 2 20mm., 2 dct., 1 dcp.

- NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates generally track NVR/DANFS but the decommissioning (4 vs 5 June 1946), Japan-transfer (14 Feb 1955 vs 1959), and JMSDF pennant (MSC 262 vs MSC-662) all conflict with DANFS - carried in gaps. Co., Greenport, L. I., N. Y.', remarks 'Diesel reduction.' Listed as an in-service vessel of the YMS type as of 15 April 1945 - confirms wooden construction, diesel machinery, and builder directly from a contemporaneous Navy publication.

Coverage runs from commissioning through early June 1946 - essentially the entire first U.S. Navy service period - and the file-unit end date of 6/4/46 independently supports the 4 June 1946 decommissioning variant carried by NavSource over DANFS's 5 June.

- Finding
- Builder corporate history and delivery record: shipbuildinghistory's Greenport Basin & Construction Co. yard page records that the company was started in the mid-19th century by Pliny C. and Theodore W. Brigham building fishing vessels and yachts, acquired neighbor Greenport Shipyard Company during WWII and expanded into steel boatbuilding, and continued postwar as Greenport Yacht & Shipbuilding Company. The yard's hull table lists YMS-376 (US Navy minesweeper, 278d tons, 136 ft, delivered 9 Aug 1943) with the note 'reclassified as Lark (AMS/MSC(O) 23), to Japan 1955 as Ninoshima (MCS-262), struck 1967' - the delivery date corroborates NavSource's 'Completed 9 August 1943' and the Japan-transfer/pnnant variants corroborate the NavSource/uboat readings against DANFS.

- Finding
- GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - spanning this hull's entire construction (1943) and U.S. service era (1943-46, 1950-53). The report reviewed Navy efforts to protect workers from asbestos exposure at Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards, the use of asbestos in Navy ships, removal costs, and compensation programs; Navy policy in 1975 was to remove and replace with nonasbestos materials only insulation that was damaged or had to be removed for repairs, modified in 1979 to selective replacement in high-maintenance areas.

- Finding
- A diesel-powered, wooden-hulled motor minesweeper built January-August 1943 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era (GAO HRD-80-2, ev-10); era-standard applications aboard diesel small craft of this type were engine and exhaust lagging, gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation within the confined machinery space. As a wood-hulled diesel craft she carried no boilers, turbines, or steam piping - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway dominant on steam warships does not apply, and the asbestos inventory of a 136-ft wooden minesweeper was materially smaller than that of steel steam vessels of the era.

The hull's 1959 transfer to Japan and undocumented final disposition remove the museum-era disclosure pathway that surfaces asbestos records for surviving hulls.
