- NavSource timeline for this hull: laid down 15 March 1943 by the Greenport Basin and Construction Co., Greenport, NY; launched 29 May 1943; completed 27 September 1943 and commissioned USS YMS-379; transferred to Norway 22 March 1945, reclassified NYMS-379 and later named Alta (M 320); returned to U.S. custody 7 June 1948, transferred to the State Department Foreign Liquidation Commission and sold to Norway the same day; struck from the Naval Register 12 August 1948; struck from the Norwegian Navy list in 1959; fate unknown. Call sign Nan-Dog-Oboe-Zebra. Specifications: 270 t.; 136'; beam 24' 6"; draft 8'; 15 kts.; complement 32; one 3"/50 dual-purpose mount, two 20 mm mounts, two depth-charge projectors; two 880 bhp General Motors 8-268A diesels, Snow and Knobstedt single reduction gear, two shafts. - Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates generally track BuShips/NVR records but are not independently verified against them here; 'completed and commissioned' 27 Sep 1943 is corroborated by uboat.net's commissioned date. Contains no asbestos content. 'Fate unknown' means final disposition after the 1959 Norwegian striking is undocumented.

- NARA inventory entry for this hull: 'YMS-379 - Sept. 28, 1943-Mar. 22, 1945 - 8' - eight deck logbooks spanning 28 September 1943 through 22 March 1945, the ship's entire US Navy commissioned life (commissioned 27 Sep 1943; transferred to Norway 22 Mar 1945). Adjacent entries corroborate the section's fidelity: YMS-378's logs end 8 Sept 1944 (consistent with her August 1944 striking after mine damage at Normandy), and sister YMS-380/-381/-382 log spans also end 22 Mar/Feb 1945 (Norwegian transfers).

- Finding
- Campaign-star credits attributed to this hull: European-African-Middle Eastern Area code E5 - Invasion of Normandy (including bombardment of Cherbourg), 6-25 June 1944; and code E219 - Convoy UGS-38, 20 April 1944. The UGS-38 credit places the ship in the escort of the convoy action in which USS Lansdale (DD-426) was sunk by air attack; the E5 credit covers minesweeping participation off the Normandy assault beaches and Cherbourg approaches. Identical dual credits are listed for the neighboring Greenport-built hulls YMS-375, -377, -380, -381, and -382 - consistent with squadron-level operations.

- Norwegian-phase combat record involving this hull: the first NYMS group (NYMS-379, -380, -381, -382) was commissioned into the Royal Norwegian Navy on 22 March 1945 and operated as the 3rd Minesweeping Unit based at Cherbourg, patrolling the English Channel - minesweeping by day, patrol by night. On 7 May 1945 at 21:45, HNoMS NYMS-382 (Lt. Trygve Sjøvold) was hit by a GNAT torpedo from U-1023 (Kptlt. Heinrich-Andreas Schroeteler) off Lyme Bay at 50°22'N, 3°09'W and sank within two minutes; the commander and 21 crew were lost, and the ten injured survivors were picked up by HNoMS NYMS-379 and HNoMS NYMS-381. NYMS-382 was the last Allied warship sunk by a German U-boat.

- asbestos_application
- Finding
- A wooden-hulled diesel-driven minesweeper completed September 1943 at a US yacht yard sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a diesel auxiliary of this type and period were engine-exhaust lagging, machinery gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation within the confined hull volume. As a diesel boat she carried no steam plant - the boiler/steam-line lagging pathway of larger combatants does not apply - and the wooden hull had no structural fireproofing requirement of a steel hull.

- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, or work package located for YMS-379. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials; no quantity; no manufacturer attribution for this hull. The absence of a steam plant materially narrows the likely application set relative to steam vessels but does not eliminate asbestos presence.

- CORRECTION - Norwegian name collision: two Royal Norwegian Navy minesweepers named 'Alta' are easily conflated. This hull (ex-USS YMS-379, ex-HNoMS NYMS-379) became Alta (M 320), an ex-American YMS-1-class wooden minesweeper, sold to Norway 7 June 1948 and struck from the Norwegian list in 1959. The preserved museum ship KNM Alta (M 314) is a DIFFERENT vessel - a Sauda-class (Adjutant-type) minesweeper built in 1953 as AMS-104 by Hodgdon Brothers, East Boothbay, Maine, in Norwegian service 1966-1996, now a floating museum vessel at Oslo.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS YMS-379 / NYMS-379 / Alta (M 320) was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener (authenticated API v4, paced): '"USS YMS-379"' type=o zero; '"YMS-379"' type=o zero; '"YMS-379"' type=r zero - no published opinion or RECAP docket names the hull string. CAVEAT: '"USS YMS-379"' type=r was attempted five times across ~55 minutes and never received a fleet pacing token - logged as blocked, though the narrower quoted phrase can only ever match a subset of the completed '"YMS-379"' docket search's zero hits, so the docket index is effectively verified negative. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case; the only 'asbestos aboard minesweepers' material is generic law-firm marketing content that does not name this hull (mesothelioma.com class page) - excluded by source policy.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a wooden-hulled 1943 diesel sweeper would carry era-standard gasket/packing/lagging materials. Deck logs (8 logbooks, NARA RG 24 custody per SL44), builder work orders, Foreign Liquidation Commission sale records, and Norwegian disposal records are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
