    Finding
NARA Special List 44 inventories US Navy deck logs for YMS-380 covering 10/12/1943 - 3/22/1945 - the hull's entire US Navy service period, the end date matching her documented transfer to Norway on 22 March 1945.

Inventory coverage dates are log-holdings dates, not commissioning/decommissioning dates. The logs themselves are held in RG 24 at NARA College Park; YMS-380 does not appear in NARA's online deck-log index (archives.gov 'Navy Deck Logs Available in the National Archives Catalog' page checked 2026-10-04), so they are presumed undigitized - an open archival lead. Spec block: displacement 270 t.; length 136'; beam 22' 9"; draft 6' 3"; speed 14.5 kts.; complement 50; armament one 3"/50 dual-purpose mount, two 20mm mounts, two depth charge projectors, two depth charge tracks; propulsion two 880bhp General Motors 8-268A diesel engines, Snow and Knobstedt single-reduction gear, two shafts. NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates corroborated here by uboat.net and shipbuilding-history yard lists, and the transfer date by the NARA log-coverage end date. Spec figures conflict with class references (complement 50 vs 29-32; beam 22'9" vs 24'6"; draft 6'3" vs 8'; engine power 880bhp vs ~440shp per unit - see gaps). Contains no asbestos content.

    Finding
The communication plan (Table II, Call Signs (Voice)) for the Naval Western Task Force's execution of Operation NEPTUNE allocates YMS 380 the voice call sign 9B2, documenting this hull's assignment to the Normandy invasion force effective 3 May 1944 planning date. Twenty other YMS-class sweepers appear in the same allocation (YMS 231, 247, 251, 305, 346-352, 355, 356, 358, 375, 377, 378, 381, 382, 406).

Documents task-force assignment, not executed action - a call-sign allocation does not itself prove which sweeps this hull performed on/after D-Day (the Desrosiers account and battle-star credit cover that). HyperWar is a faithful-transcription mirror of the official plan; Sheets 1-3 of the annex were missing from the source document. No asbestos content.

    Finding
First-person veteran account for this hull: Desrosiers was at the helm of YMS-380 off Normandy on 6 June 1944. His squadron of 11 YMS-class minesweepers lined up in the Channel at midnight 5 June; six swept the last 20 miles to Omaha Beach, clearing a channel about 300 yards wide, and withdrew under German shore-battery fire without losing a sweep. He describes acoustic, moored, and magnetic sweep methods; the ship as wooden-hulled, 136 ft, with a crew of four officers and about 30 enlisted men under a captain named George Harrelson; and a ship's dog, Lady. At Cherbourg on Christmas Eve 1944, YMS-380 stood out beyond the outer harbor to respond to a torpedoed troop transport carrying US replacement troops. The newspaper reports Desrosiers, Harrelson, and Chief Boatswain Robert Corbin received Bronze Stars for the Normandy work.

YMS-380 crew, June 1944 - March 1945; embarked troops of the torpedoed transport (Dec 1944)
    Limitations
Oral history published 55 years after the events - internally consistent with the operation-plan assignment and battle-star credit but uncorroborated in detail by an official source this session. The Christmas Eve troopship is not named in the account; date, location (off Cherbourg), and circumstances are consistent with SS Leopoldville (torpedoed by U-486, 24 Dec 1944) but identification is inference, and the account's figures (~10,000 aboard / ~4,000 dead) materially exceed documented totals (~2,235 troops embarked, ~763 soldiers dead per uboat.net; 'more than 2,000' aboard, 'approximately 800' killed per ABMC) - reported here as recollection, not established fact. Finding
The engagement-credit list for this hull records two WWII credits: engagement E5, 'Invasion of Normandy (including bombardment of Cherbourg),' 6 June - 25 June 1944; and engagement E219, 'Convoy UGS-38,' 20 April 1944 - the latter consistent with an Atlantic/Mediterranean convoy-screening deployment before the Normandy assignment.

Class documentation for this hull's type: the wood-hulled YMS-1 class was designed by Henry B. Nevins, Inc. (City Island, NY), first keel 4 March 1941; 481 ships of the type built at 35 yacht yards (12 East Coast, 19 West Coast, 4 Great Lakes) for inshore sweeping ahead of amphibious assaults; YMS-135 through -445, -480, -481 (the range including this hull) were the single-stack sub-type. Surviving YMS's were reclassified AMS and given names in 1947 - this hull left US service in 1945 and so never received a US name.

    Finding
A wooden-hulled, diesel-powered minesweeper built in 1943 at a small yacht yard sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos era; era-standard applications aboard a diesel combatant of this type and period were diesel exhaust lagging, machinery insulation, gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation in a confined 136-ft hull. As a wood-hulled vessel she carried less structural thermal insulation than a steel combatant, and with no steam plant the boiler/turbine lagging pathway does not apply.

Builder documentation for this hull: Greenport Basin & Construction Co. was founded in the mid-19th century by Pliny C. and Theodore W. Brigham, building fishing vessels and yachts; during WWII it acquired neighboring Greenport Shipyard Company and expanded into steel boatbuilding; it continues today as Greenport Yacht & Shipbuilding Co. The yard list's YMS-380 row gives delivery 11 October 1943 and disposition 'To Norway 1945 as NYMS 380/Vorma (M 321)'. Norwegian-derived fleet lists corroborate NYMS 380 renamed Vorma (M 321), in Norwegian service 1945-1959; the National Library of Norway's maritime bibliography indexes a journal article on KNM Vorma (Thorbjorn Ingebrigtsen, Skipet arg. 24 nr. 3, 1998, p. 37) - a Norwegian-side archival lead.

No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS YMS-380 (NYMS-380/Vorma M 321) was found in the public sources searched. A secondary web sweep surfaced no law-firm or marketing content naming this hull at all - the hull is below the threshold of listicle coverage. CAVEAT: CourtListener could not be queried this session - the fleet pacing budget was continuously spent (helper exit 2 on all attempts); logged as blocked in search_ledger, not as a negative result.

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era-standard insulation practices on a 1943 diesel combatant make era materials plausible but unproven. The litigation repository search is a genuine open gap (fleet-paced, never reached the API). Deck logs (RG 24, 10/1943-3/1945) are inventoried but undigitized and could contain availability/materiel detail. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
