- Finding
- NARA inventory documents seven logbooks for USS YMS-387 spanning 17 August 1943 - 30 June 1945 (printed p. 521 of Special List 44, row 'YMS-387 | Aug. 17, 1943-June 30, 1945 | 7'). The coverage begins on the completion/commissioning date and ends mid-1945, before the post-surrender minesweeping period. These logs (RG 24) are the primary on-board record set for her WWII service - locations, weather, personnel movements, and operations are documented there, not yet digitized-verified in this session.

- Finding aid only: SL44 establishes that seven logbooks exist and their date span, not their contents - no page of the logs themselves was read. Coverage ends 30 June 1945, so the final weeks of the war, any postwar sweeping, and the 1946 disposal fall outside the inventoried span. NARA hosts SL44 only as named-vessel web tables for public browsing; the numbered-vessel entry was verified via the ACPL Genealogy Center's page-image mirror of the published NARA document (batch source note 'PDF page 120' refers to the PDF pagination of the compiled SL44; the printed page is 521).

[5]National Museum of the Pacific War / Admiral Nimitz Foundation, Oral History Interview with Robert Allender, 23 September 2001 (OH00247; audio 1:33:58 with 25 p. transcript ark:/67531/metapth1603598), hosted by The Portal to Texas History, UNT Libraries - crew-member account of service aboard USS YMS-387 [museum_official]

- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- Robert Allender, a third-class sonar operator, describes duty aboard USS YMS-387 after sonar school at San Diego: 'we did a lot of coastal sweeps and then for about two months we worked as a training ship' taking prospective minesweeper crews out under her own crew's supervision. He describes her sweep outfit - a magnetic cable trailed from a spool to set off magnetic mines, a lowered acoustic device for acoustic mines, and wire sweeps to cut mine moorings - and notes the hull was wooden ('this ship was a wooden ship'), requiring little degaussing. The minesweeper 'was always anchored near Terminal Island, right between Long Beach and San Pedro.' He left the ship just after Christmas 1944 for the Small Craft Training Center on Terminal Island, then joined the commissioning crew of a patrol craft at Portland, Oregon in spring 1945. He recalled the minesweeper's complement as 'about 45.'

- Limitations
- Oral-history recollection recorded ~56 years after service; catalog description verified, transcript content read via auto-generated Whisper captions (transcription noise possible). Allender's 'about 45' complement conflicts with NavSource's spec figure of 32 - carried in gaps, not resolved. The depth-charge/drydock narrative elsewhere in the interview concerns his later patrol craft, not this hull. Contains no asbestos content.

[6]NavSource Online, Auxiliary Motor Minesweeper (YMS) class index - class construction program, subclass variants, 1947/1955 reclassification history (live navsource.net page verified 2026-10-04) [other_primary]
- Locator
- NavSource 11/19idx.htm 'Auxiliary Motor Minesweepers (YMS)' header narrative and class characteristics block
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- Class context: the YMS-1 type was a wood-hulled motor minesweeper designed by Henry B. Nevins, Inc., City Island, NY (first keel 4 March 1941); 561 built at 35 small yacht yards (12 East Coast, 19 West Coast, four Great Lakes) - small-yard wooden construction, the category Colberg Boat Works belonged to. YMS-1 through YMS-134 had two stacks; YMS-135 through YMS-445, 480, and 481 (which includes YMS-387) had one - the single-stack subclass. Surviving YMS hulls were reclassified AMS and given names in 1947 and received the MSC(O) symbol in 1955; YMS-387 was sold in 1946 and so never carried an AMS number or name.

- Finding
- Yard context for this hull's builder: Colberg Boat Works was started in 1896 by three brothers, Wilton, Jack and Gordon Colberg, and survived into the 1990s; the yard stood at 848 West Fremont Street, Stockton, immediately east of the Stephen Bros. yard. The construction table carries 'YMS 387 | US Navy | Minesweeper | 278 | 136 | 17-Aug-43 | Sold 1946' - corroborating builder identity and the 17 August 1943 delivery/completion date. Documented Colberg YMS production includes YMS-95, -97, -99, and YMS-383 through YMS-388; the yard went on to build Agile/Aggressive-class ocean minesweepers in the 1950s (AM-432/433/434 rows on Colton's postwar minesweeper table).

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- A wood-hulled, diesel-powered motor minesweeper built 1942-43 at a small California boat-yard type facility sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a small diesel craft of this type and period were engine and exhaust lagging, gaskets in fuel/oil/exhaust flanges, valve packing, and electrical insulation. As a diesel vessel she carried no boilers or steam system - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam ships does not apply, and inferred scope is materially smaller than for steam vessels of the era.

- Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, work package, or fitting-out record located for YMS-387. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity. Product names are normalized era terms; no manufacturer attribution for this hull. Wooden-hull construction bounds but does not eliminate the inference (auxiliary systems, wiring, and flanged joints still used gaskets/packing/insulation of the era).

- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO reviewed the Navy's efforts to protect workers from asbestos exposure at the Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards, including the use of asbestos in Navy ships, the cost of removing asbestos, and compensation programs for asbestos-related disabilities - documenting that asbestos insulation was used aboard Navy ships across the era that covers this hull's construction (1942-43) and service (1943-46). The Navy's 1975 policy removed/replaced only damaged insulation or insulation requiring removal for repairs; in 1979 it was modified to selectively replace asbestos insulation in high-maintenance areas.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS YMS-387 was found in the public sources searched. CAVEAT: CourtListener could not be queried this session - the authenticated helper was refused on five attempts across the session (fleet-wide pacing budget momentarily spent, ~58/hr shared across sessions) - logged as blocked in search_ledger, not as a negative result. The only 'asbestos aboard' material surfaced in secondary sweeps is law-firm/aggregator listicle content asserting asbestos without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy.
