- Documented for this hull: YMS-1 Class Auxiliary Motor Minesweeper laid down 18 July 1942 by the Harbor Boat Building Co., Terminal Island, CA; launched 9 August 1943; completed 11 January 1944; struck from the Naval Register 10 June 1947; transferred to the State Department Foreign Liquidation Commission 21 October 1947 and sold; fate unknown. Specs: 270 t., 136 ft., beam 24'6", draft 8 ft., 15 kts., complement 32; one 3"/50 DP mount, two 20 mm, two depth-charge projectors; two 880 bhp GM 8-268A diesels, Snow & Knobstedt single-reduction gear, two shafts. Commanding officer listed: LT J. B. Mohney, USNR (1945). Photo captions: alongside an attack transport circa 1944 (NHHC photo NH 92701, collection of Rear Admiral Bradford Bartlett); alongside USS Russell (DD-414) at Ulithi anchorage 11-12 April 1945 preparing to escort an Okinawa resupply convoy, with the caption note that YMS-396 was 'Flag of CoMineRon 104,' covering local Palau and Ulithi escort work for nearly a year (photo by Lt.(jg) Ed Klump, USS Russell).

- Harbor Boat Building construction trades (1942-44); crew (~32, 1944-47); ComMineRon 104 staff embarked (flagship caption)
- Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestones are consistent with NVR-derived data and corroborated independently (uboat.net, builder yard table), but the ComMineRon 104 flagship statement rests on a single photo caption, not a command history document. Page uses 'Completed' rather than 'Commissioned' for the 11 January 1944 in-service date. Contains no asbestos content.

- Finding
- The official awards manual's ship-eligibility list credits YMS-396 with five operation windows: capture and occupation of Saipan 15 Jun 1944 - 23 Jul 1944 (code printed 'P299-2'; the code table's P29-2 is Saipan, 11 Jun - 10 Aug 44); capture and occupation of Guam 24 Jul 1944 - 10 Aug 1944 (P29-7); and postwar Minesweeping Operations Pacific: Nagoya (Honshu area) 23-25 Oct 1945 (P207-3), Kobe (Honshu area) 20 Dec 1945 - 2 Mar 1946 (P207-9), and a window printed '22 Feb 48 - 2 Mar 46' under code 'P207-38' - a code not present in the manual's own table (series ends at P207-28), whose dates exactly match the P207-28 Yangtze River Approaches window of 22 Feb - 2 Mar 1946.

- Finding type

- Finding
- NARA Special List 44 inventories deck logbooks for YMS-396 covering 12 January 1944 - 30 June 1945 (row: 'YMS-396 | 1/12/1944 | 6/30/1945'). The series is RG 24 (Records of the Bureau of Naval Personnel), Entry 118, NAID 581208. YMS-396 does not appear on NARA's published list of digitized-online deck logs - the logs are physical holdings at Archives II, College Park. The documented span begins the day after the vessel's 11 January 1944 completion; post-June-1945 service (Japan-area occupation sweeping through March 1946, return, disposal) is not covered by this inventory row.

- Secondary reference work (Guomundur Helgason's Allied Warships), consistent with NavSource on every shared date. Its 'End service 13 Sep 1957' field is anomalous - the hull was stricken and sold in 1947; the date coincides with sister YMS-395 (Linnet)'s decommissioning and is treated as a data defect (see ev-10 correction row). 'Commissioned' wording versus NavSource 'Completed' noted. No asbestos content.

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- A wood-hulled diesel auxiliary motor minesweeper built 1942-44 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era, but carries far less asbestos-relevant scope than a steam combatant: no boilers, no turbines, no steam-line lagging. Era-standard applications aboard a small diesel craft of this type were diesel exhaust lagging, machinery insulation, gaskets and valve packing, electrical insulation, galley-equipment insulation, and brake/clutch linings on sweep winches and windlass - in a 136-foot wooden hull with a complement of 32.

- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, or builder specification located for YMS-396. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity. The YMS design's wooden hull and diesel plant make the steam-lagging pathway inapplicable; the confined-volume exposure dynamic still applies to whatever era materials were fitted.

- Finding type

- Finding
- CORRECTIONS carried against secondary-source defects: (1) uboat.net's 'End service 13 Sep 1957' field is inconsistent with its own stricken/sold rows (10 Jun / 21 Oct 1947) and matches sister YMS-395 (Linnet)'s decommissioning date exactly - treated as cross-row data contamination, not a fact about this hull. (2) Shipbuilding History's 'struck 1946' conflicts with the documented 10 June 1947 striking; NavSource/uboat.net agreement carried. (3) NAVPERS 15,790 prints 'P299-2' (P29-2 Saipan) and 'P207-38' (a code absent from the manual's own table; the accompanying dates 22 Feb-2 Mar 1946 match P207-28 Yangtze River Approaches exactly). (4) Commanding-officer name discrepancy: NavSource lists 'LT J. B. Mohney, USNR'; a funeral-home obituary for Dr. Joseph P. Mohney describes him as captain of YMS-396 - corroborating the surname and command while conflicting on the middle initial.

CourtListener: 'USS YMS-396' opinions returned zero results; 'USS YMS-396' and 'YMS-396' RECAP docket searches returned 577 and 3,260 hits respectively, all tokenized keyword noise - no returned document contains the string 'YMS-396' or even 'YMS'; the fourth base query ('YMS-396' opinions) could not be completed (fleet pacing budget spent - see search_ledger sl-14 for final status). Secondary web sweep found no qualifying case and, unusually, not even law-firm listicle claims for this hull.

- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - but this is a small wooden diesel craft sold abroad in 1947, before any asbestos survey or abatement regime existed, so ship-specific asbestos documentation may never have been generated. Deck logs, builder work records, and FLC disposal records are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
