    Finding
Special List 44 inventories a single deck-log series for YMS-4 covering 1 May 1942 - 30 June 1945 - the full commissioned-service span from completion through the end of WWII hostilities. These logs are held in RG 24 at the National Archives; the NARA 'Deck Logs Available Online' list does not include YMS-4, so the series is inventoried but not digitized in the public catalog as of this date.

    Limitations
Deck-log coverage dates are log-inventory bounds, not asserted commissioning/decommissioning dates. Logs not digitized - content unexamined; they are a retrieval lead, not evidence of any condition aboard. A digitization pipeline for WWII-era logs is ongoing at NARA, so online status may change.

    Finding
Documented service for this hull: ordered 11 December 1940; commissioned 1 May 1942; commanding officers listed for the war - A.E. Nichols USNR (May 1942-mid 1943), John Francis Maddox Jr. USNR (mid 1943-mid 1944), T.F. Davis USNR (mid 1944-mid/late 1944), William Douglas Lomax USNR (mid/late-late 1944), J.B. Myers USNR (late 1944-mid 1945), Lt.(jg) Floyd D. Bender USNR (mid 1945-early 1946). Notable event: Operation Oboe VI, Allied landings at Brunei, 10 June 1945 - YMS-4 (Lt.(jg) F.D. Bender) is listed in Sweep Unit Three (Task Unit 78.1.53) of the TG 78.1.5 Minesweeping Group with YMS-39, YMS-340 and YMS-365, and among the minesweepers screening Task Unit 76.20.50's return to Brunei Bay on 21 June 1945. The accompanying narrative, transcribed from an action report, records sustained mine clearance off Brunei Bay and the Miri-Lutong-Baram Point area from 7 June, with USS Salute (AM-294) mined and sunk on 8 June.

Crew of 32 under Lt.(jg) Bender (Brunei operation, June 1945); wartime crew 1942-45
    Limitations
uboat.net is a secondary compilation; the order of battle and narrative are transcribed from an official action report but the page itself is not the primary document. The credited operation-credit table (ev-04) lists YMS-4 for the overlapping Balikpapan operation (P37-3) rather than Brunei (P37-2) - the two assignments are consistent (sweep units worked both areas in June-July 1945) but the unit-level participation credit is not reconciled in a primary source here. No asbestos content.

Campaign participation credit listed for YMS-4: P37-3, Balikpapan operation, 15 June - 15 July 1945; and P207, Minesweeping Operations Pacific, 10-18 December 1945. Together with the Brunei OOB (ev-03) this places the hull in Seventh Fleet Borneo-area minesweeping in mid-1945 and in post-surrender mine clearance in the Pacific in December 1945.

Secondary compilation of the official Navy campaign-credit table, not the primary document - the underlying award manual entry was not independently pulled this session. Notably the table does NOT credit YMS-4 with P37-2 Brunei Bay (7-17 June 1945) although the action-report OOB places her in a Brunei sweep unit - carry as an unreconciled detail, not an error. Class context for the YMS-1 type: the first U.S. 'Yard class Minesweeper' (YMS-1) was laid down 4 March 1941 at the Henry B. Nevins yard, City Island - the class design is credited to that yard ('designed by this company'). The class was wood-hulled; 481 ships completed to one general design at 35 yacht yards (12 East Coast, 19 West Coast, 4 Great Lakes), used for inshore sweeping; survivors were reclassified AMS and named in 1947 - which never applied to YMS-4, struck in 1946. NHHC's YMS-445 page frames the type as 'yard craft' that patrolled navy yards and adjacent areas and supplied the Lend-Lease program.

    Finding
The Nevins yard production table lists 'YMS 4, U.S. Navy, Minesweeper, 136 ft, Del'y 1-May-42, Struck 1946' - corroborating builder, delivery date, and striking year from the builder's-side compilation. The yard itself was a yacht yard: Henry B. Nevins bought the Hansen Boatyard at the foot of Winter Street, City Island, in 1907; Nevins built 24 YMS-1-class minesweepers for the Navy plus aircraft-rescue boats during the war; the yard sold in 1954 and closed in 1962 (site now City Island's PS 175).

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
A wood-hulled, diesel-powered minesweeper built 1941-42 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos era but presents a materially smaller asbestos surface than steam combatants: no boilers, no steam lines, no turbine lagging. Era-standard asbestos applications on a small diesel minecraft of this period were engine and exhaust lagging, machinery gaskets and packing, electrical insulation, and composition deck coverings - small-quantity, maintenance-disturbance exposures rather than steam-plant lagging fields.

Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials; no quantity; no manufacturer attribution. The wood hull removes the structural-insulation pathway of steel combatants, but does not remove machinery, gasket, electrical, or deck-covering applications.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or qualifying litigation naming USS YMS-4 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener opinion search for "YMS-4" returned zero results; the remaining three base queries (docket, and 'USS YMS-4' in both indexes) are pending fleet pacing budget this session - opinion-space result is a genuine zero, docket-space coverage is partial. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case or asbestos documentation; the only 'asbestos aboard' material is law-firm marketing content on generic YMS/minesweeper listicles with no primary sourcing - excluded by source policy.
