- NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates are corroborated by uboat.net, shipbuildinghistory, and NARA SL44 (ev-02, ev-03, ev-04). Page contains no asbestos or material content. The internal 'Scrapped in 1953' vs 'stripped and burned mid-1980s' conflict is carried to gaps, not resolved.

- NARA Special List 44, an index of U.S. Navy deck logs by ship number, lists YMS-408 with logbook coverage beginning 6 January 1944 and ending 30 June 1945. The coverage start date matches NavSource's commissioning date (6 January 1944, New Orleans) and supports the commission-date entry; the coverage end coincides with the end of her listed Okinawa Gunto operation (30 June 1945).

- A logbook index is a history locator, not a commissioning order, service narrative, or material record. The listed run ends 30 June 1945 though the ship remained in service to 1 January 1947 - post-June-1945 logs (Japan-area occupation minesweeping, return, West Coast layup) are outside this index run, not absent by evidence. Does not establish asbestos presence, products, quantity, individual exposure, causation, or legal eligibility.

- Finding
- Yard output table for this hull's builder: O/N 256002, YMS-408, US Navy, minesweeper, 320 GT, 136 ft LOA, delivered 18 December 1943 - annotated 'sold 1947 as Eva, burned and lost in the 1980s'. Yard history: Henry C. Grebe & Company was the successor to Great Lakes Boat Building (started Milwaukee 1915, moved to Chicago 1921), located on the west side of the North Branch of the Chicago River just north of the West Belmont Avenue bridge; it built its last boat in 1970 but did not finally close until 1994. Grebe built at least five YMS hulls - YMS-406 through YMS-409 and YMS-418.

- Secondary yard-output compilation. 'Delivered 18 Dec 1943' corroborates NavSource 'Completed 18 December 1943' and the 6 January 1944 commissioning carried at ev-09. 'burned and lost in the 1980s' corroborates NavSource's stripped-and-burned line but not its 'Scrapped in 1953' line (see gaps). 320 GT is gross tonnage, not the 270 t displacement figure - different measure, not a conflict. No asbestos content; Henry C. Grebe is not an Atlas shipyards.json entry.

- Finding
- A wooden-hulled, diesel-powered minesweeper completed December 1943 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos era. Era-standard applications aboard a small diesel combatant of this period were machinery and diesel-exhaust lagging, gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation. As a diesel vessel she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply - and her wooden hull carried none of the structural thermal insulation of a steel-hulled steam ship; her asbestos-relevant footprint was correspondingly narrower.

- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- Class context for this hull: auxiliary motor minesweepers were small wood-hulled minesweepers commissioned for WWII service, numbered but unnamed, built at 35 yacht/boatyards rather than larger shipyards; 561 hulls were produced in the spring 1942 - spring 1945 window. The only significant variation within the type was appearance - the Mk I group (YMS-1 through -134/-135, sources differ by one hull) had two stacks, the Mk II group (YMS-135 through -445) had one, and the Mk III group (YMS-446 through -479/-481) had none; YMS-408 falls in the single-stack Mk II group. Surviving YMSs were reclassified as AMS, given names, and rerated as mine warfare ships in 1947, then received the type symbol MSC(O) in 1955; this hull was decommissioned 1 January 1947, declared surplus 31 March 1947, transferred to the War Shipping Administration 29 June 1947, and struck 17 July 1947, and so never carried a name or AMS designation.

- Limitations
- Class background only; the Mk I/II boundary reads 'YMS-1 through -134' vs 'Mk I (YMS-1-135)' across the two sources - one-hull discrepancy immaterial to YMS-408, which is inside the single-stack group under either numbering. Class index lists 320 t displacement, 33 complement, 12 kt designed speed vs the hull page's 270 t, 32, 15 kts - carried to gaps. No asbestos content.

- Finding type

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or litigation naming USS YMS-408 / Eva (O/N 256002) was found in the public sources searched. No DANFS entry exists for this hull - NavSource states 'There is no DANFS History currently available for YMS-408'; DANFS covered commissioned ships with assigned names, and this craft was numbered but unnamed. NVR carries no entry - ships disposed prior to 1987 are not in the register. The secondary web litigation sweep surfaced no qualifying case and no law-firm marketing page naming this hull. CourtListener status: the four prescribed authenticated base queries could not be completed this session - the fleet-wide pacing limiter returned 'budget momentarily spent' on all attempts; logged as blocked in the search ledger, not as a negative result.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - and the CourtListener sweep is a genuine open gap (pacing-blocked, not run), so litigation status is unverified on that repository. Deck logs (RG 24), builder records, and the WSA disposal file are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

- CORRECTION: uboat.net lists 'Commissioned 18 Dec 1943' for this hull, but that date is the completion/delivery date - NavSource records 'Completed 18 December 1943' and 'Commissioned USS YMS-408, 6 January 1944 at New Orleans, LA', the shipbuildinghistory yard table records delivery on 18 December 1943, and NARA's Special List 44 shows her deck-log run beginning 1/6/1944. Two sources plus the deck-log index resolve this: she was completed/delivered at Chicago on 18 December 1943 and commissioned at New Orleans on 6 January 1944 - consistent with Great Lakes-built YMS craft transiting the inland waterway for Gulf-coast commissioning.
