- NARA inventory documents two logbooks for USS YMS-410 spanning 18 July 1944 - 30 June 1945 (printed p. 522 of Special List 44, row 'YMS-410 | July 18, 1944-June 30, 1945 | 2'). The coverage opens on her commissioning date and runs through the Okinawa campaign to within weeks of the Pacific war's end. These logs (RG 24) are the primary on-board record set for her WWII service - locations, weather, personnel movements, and operations are documented there, not yet digitized-verified in this session.

- Finding
- Primary Navy letter naming this hull and its combat service: the writer (Lt. Peter F. Beville, USNR - NavSource's YMS-81 page lists him as 'LT Peter F. Belville, USNR,' CO April 1944 - 1945, a spelling variant) states that Lt. (jg) L. G. Knoles's services under his operational command 'were outstanding during the pre-invasion and invasion of the Okinawa Gunto'; that he 'kept his ship operating night and day for a prolonged period; had arrived at the scene of the invasion seven days before the invasion; put up a heavy curtain of fire when the U.S.S. YMS-81 and U.S.S. YMS-140 were attacked by suicide planes; operated his ship under point blank range of Japanese shore batteries; and conducted anti-suicide boat and anti-submarine patrol; as well as the mine sweeping involved.' The letter explains that 'YMS's were operated night and day on the Okinawa operation - employed at night as anti-suicide and anti-submarine patrol craft and as sweepers in the daytime,' and records that 'Lt. (jg) Knoles had previously been in the invasion of Luzon.'

- Limitations
- A recommendation letter, not a citation or award record - whether the Bronze Star was conferred is not documented by this source. It is the operational commander's account of YMS-410's service under his tactical control (Task Unit 52.6.1); the Luzon service is attributed to Knoles personally - the ship's presence is implied by his continuous command of YMS-410 (18 Jul 1944 - 1945) but not separately stated. - Finding type

- Finding
- The operational commander's own unit history corroborates the Okinawa operating pattern described in the award letter for this hull: YMS-81 - flagship of a unit of eight YMSs under Beville (former Commander Task Unit 52.6.1) - departed Ulithi 19 March 1945, 'arrived in the vicinity of Okinawa on 25 March 1945, which was seven days before the invasion of Okinawa,' and performed 'scheduled minesweeping operations, anti-submarine patrol, anti-suicide boat patrol, and anti-aircraft actions'; took part in the invasion of Kume Shima (a phase of the Okinawa operation); and remained at Okinawa until mid-August 1945. The same history records the unit's earlier Philippines service including the Lingayen/Luzon invasion (task force 'arrived at Luzon three days prior to the invasion'). NavSource's vessel pages independently date the suicide-plane attacks described in the letter: YMS-81 'damaged by suicide plane 7 April 1945 in Okinawa area' and YMS-140 'hit by a kamikaze off Okinawa 7 April 1945.'

Date conflict: the history says YMS-81 was attacked by a suicide plane 6 April 1945 while the NavSource page caption says 7 April 1945 - variant unresolved (see gaps). No asbestos content.

- Finding
- Yard context for this hull's builder: Bellingham Marine Railway Co. was a boat-repair business that became Bellingham Marine Railway and Boatbuilding Co. in 1921 (new facility on the west side of the Whatcom Creek waterway on Squalicum Creek); owned by O. I. Thorsen and J. G. Brown, joined in 1928 by A. S. Nilsen; in 1941 it became Bellingham Shipyards when it merged with Bellingham Iron Works, and after the war was renamed Bellingham Marine; closed 1963. The yard's construction table carries '251670 | U S Navy | Minesweeper | YMS | 410 | 278 | 136 | 18-Sep-44 | Sold 1946 as Santa Teresa' - corroborating builder identity, the 18 September 1944 delivery/completion date, and the merchant sale under the Santa Teresa name, and adding merchant official number 251670.

- The FY1943 Navy shipbuilding program table places YMS-410 in a four-boat contract awarded 21 July 1943: row '36 YMS | 410-13 | (136') | 1799 | 21 Jul 43 | Bellingham' - i.e., YMS-410 through YMS-413, 136-foot minesweepers, built at Bellingham. This corroborates uboat.net's order date of 21 July 1943 and identifies the contract sisters YMS-411, -412, and -413 at the same yard. Adjacent rows show the parallel contracts: YMS-414 through -417 to Stadium (Yacht Basin, Cleveland), YMS-418 through -421 to H. C. Grebe.

- Class context: the YMS-1 type was a wood-hulled motor minesweeper designed by Henry B. Nevins, Inc., City Island, NY (keel of YMS-1 laid 4 March 1941). A total of 561 were built at 35 small yacht yards (12 East Coast, 19 West Coast, four Great Lakes). YMS-1 through YMS-134 had two stacks; YMS-135 through YMS-445, 480, and 481 - which includes YMS-410 - had one (the single-stack subclass); YMS-446 through 479 had none. Surviving YMS hulls still in Navy custody were reclassified AMS and given names in 1947, received the MSC(O) symbol in 1955, bore much of the mine-warfare burden in Korea, and served Naval Reserve training into the 1960s; the last in US service (Ruff, ex-YMS-327) was struck November 1969. YMS-410 left Navy custody in November 1946 and took no part in either reclassification.

- Finding
- A wood-hulled, diesel-powered motor minesweeper built 1943-44 at a small Bellingham, WA boat yard sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a small diesel craft of this type and period were engine and exhaust lagging, gaskets in fuel/oil/exhaust flanges, valve packing, and electrical insulation. As a diesel vessel she carried no boilers or steam system - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam ships does not apply, and inferred scope is materially smaller than for steam vessels of the era.

- Finding
- GAO reviewed the Navy's efforts to protect workers from asbestos exposure at the Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards, including the use of asbestos in Navy ships, the cost of removing asbestos, and compensation programs for asbestos-related disabilities - documenting that asbestos insulation was used aboard Navy ships across the era that covers this hull's construction (1943-44) and service (1944-46). The Navy's 1975 policy removed/replaced only damaged insulation or insulation requiring removal for repairs; in 1979 it was modified to selectively replace asbestos insulation in high-maintenance areas.
