NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates generally track official records and are corroborated here by uboat.net, the awards manual, and Special List 44. 'Completed 16 September 1944' is read as the in-commission date (consistent with uboat.net 'Commissioned' and the SL44 log-coverage start). Contains no asbestos content. The WSA-transfer wording is loose - WSA was abolished 1 September 1946 (see ev-08).

    Finding
Special List 44's ship-number index inventories US Navy deck logs for this hull: 'YMS-412 9/16/1944 6/30/1945'. Deck logs covering commissioning through 30 June 1945 therefore exist in NARA custody (RG 24 deck-log series, College Park).

    Limitations
The dates are log-coverage inventory dates, not asserted commissioning/decommissioning dates - the start coincides with commissioning but the 30 June 1945 end does not mark end of service: the awards manual (ev-04) documents operations through January 1946, so later logs exist but are not itemized for this hull in this index. The deck logs are paper records; the NARA online digitized-deck-log index lists no YMS-412 entry (numbered vessels appear there only under later names, and this hull was never named). The five P207 sub-operations belong to 'Minesweeping Operations Pacific' (23 Jun 45 - 2 Mar 46; one star for participation in one or more) - the post-surrender clearance of Japanese minefields in home waters.

    Limitations
An award-eligibility list, not a unit history: it documents credited participation windows, not day-by-day activity, position, or task organization. The Naval History Division itself flagged hundreds of entry errors in this manual for other operations (1950s correspondence re: Leyte Gulf/Lingayen entries; YMS-412's entries are not individually challenged). Dates verified in the actual transcription text, not via the commercial ribbon-vendor reproductions that circulate the same data. Contains no asbestos content.

    Finding
A wooden-hulled diesel-powered auxiliary minesweeper completed September 1944 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. Era-standard applications aboard a small diesel combatant of this type were diesel-exhaust lagging and machinery insulation in the engine space, gaskets and valve packing throughout piping systems, electrical insulation and panelboard, and brake linings on the sweep winch and windlass. As a diesel vessel with a wooden hull she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply, and her asbestos loading would be materially lighter than a steam vessel of the era.

Builder context: Bellingham Marine Railway Co. was a boat-repair business dating to the early 20th century; became Bellingham Marine Railway and Boatbuilding Co. in 1921; merged with Bellingham Iron Works in 1941 to become Bellingham Shipyards; renamed Bellingham Marine after the war; closed 1963. The yard table lists YMS-412 (delivered 16-Sep-44, disposition 'Struck 1946') among wartime builds spanning the BYMS 17-20 minesweepers, BARS 9-12 rescue ships, YFN 698-703 lighters, the YMS 269-276 and 342-345 blocks, PCS 1462-1463 subchasers, ATR 68-73 tugs, YTL yard tugs, YO 216-217 tankers, and YP 641-642 patrol craft.

The 'Struck 1946' disposition conflicts with the NavSource/uboat 13 May 1947 disposal - see ev-08 and gaps. Contains no asbestos content; no yard-level asbestos documentation exists for this small yacht/boat yard (contrast: NIOSH-surveyed yards like Electric Boat).

    Finding
DISPOSITION CONFLICT: NavSource and uboat.net date the disposal 13 May 1947 (NavSource frames it as a War Shipping Administration transfer and sale); the yard-production tables say 'Struck 1946'. A May 1947 disposal would have been administered by the U.S. Maritime Commission - the War Shipping Administration was abolished 1 September 1946 - so NavSource's 'WSA' wording is loose usage for the successor disposal channel. Both variants are carried; the record does not assert which event (striking vs transfer/sale) each source dates.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS YMS-412 was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener: exact-phrase 'YMS-412' opinion query returned 0 results and exact-phrase 'USS YMS-412' docket query returned 0 results (verified negatives on both indexes); the 'YMS-412' docket and 'USS YMS-412' opinion queries were attempted repeatedly and paced out each time (fleet budget ~58/hr shared across sessions) - logged as blocked, not as negative results (the 'USS' opinion query is bounded by the completed hull-opinion negative). Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case and no hull-specific 'asbestos aboard' marketing page for YMS-412 (generic asbestos-ship listicles exist - excluded by source policy).

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - and the hull-level docket index is a genuine open gap (paced out, not run; the name-level docket index is verified negative). The 9/16/1944-6/30/1945 deck logs, builder construction records, and any 1947 disposal/survey files are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
