    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates generally track official records and are corroborated here by NHHC (transfer) and NARA SL44 (log coverage), but the builder location it prints ('Brooklyn, NY') conflicts with the Wheeler Whitestone yard table (see ev-07/gaps). Contains no asbestos content. No ship photograph exists in the archive.

    Finding
The NHHC-published appendix lists YMS-42 as Soviet minesweeper T-592, transfer date 19 July 1945, disposition '1955-stricken' (table sources: Department of the Navy, Ships Data: U.S. Naval Vessels vol. II, 1 January 1949, NAVSHIPS 250-012; S. S. Berezhnoi, Flot SSSR: Korabli i suda lendliza, 1994). Narrative context: U.S. Navy Detachment 3294 at Fort Randall/Cold Bay, Alaska trained some 12,000 Soviet personnel and transferred 149 ships in 142 days (April-September 1945); Maxwell's team 'transferred a second increment of minesweepers ahead of schedule, so that by the end of July 100 vessels out of the original 180 were in Soviet hands' - the 19 July 1945 transfers (YMS-38/T-593, YMS-42/T-592, YMS-75/T-590, YMS-139/T-594, YMS-178/T-588, YMS-184/T-595, YMS-216/T-596, YMS-237/T-589, YMS-241/T-591, YMS-272/T-597, YMS-273/T-598, YMS-295/T-599) are this second increment. Russell notes the wooden-hulled YMS boats 'performed a variety of combat, auxiliary, and scientific tasks' under Soviet colors and 'all were decommissioned by the mid-1950s.'

    Limitations
Official Navy history publication; the appendix row is ship-specific for transfer date, Soviet designation, and Soviet disposition, but contains no asbestos or material content and does not describe the transfer ceremony for this individual hull beyond the table row. '1955-stricken' is the Soviet-side disposition, not a U.S. Navy Register action; no U.S. strike date is given.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
Special List 44 inventories U.S. Navy deck logs for YMS-42 covering 1 May 1942 - 18 July 1945 (PDF page 121) - log coverage spanning essentially her entire U.S. commission, ending the day before the 19 July 1945 Soviet transfer. The logs exist at the National Archives (Archives II, College Park, MD) but YMS-42 is absent from NARA's 'Navy Deck Logs Available in the National Archives Catalog' digitized list (checked 2026-10-04: digitized YMS hulls are YMS-136, -238, -268, -271, -291, -299, -306, -312, -321, -324, -327, -395, -402, -425, -444, -446, -47, -479, -53).

    Limitations
Archival lead only: SL44 is a finding aid, not the logs themselves - it establishes that deck logs exist and their date coverage, not their content. The listed dates are log coverage, not asserted commissioning/decommissioning dates (coverage begins 1 May 1942, six days after the 25 April 1942 commissioning). The logs are undigitized; their contents (operations, locations, crew, maintenance entries) are unexamined.

  4. [4]Era inference built on: NavSource specifications (wooden-hulled YMS-1 class; two GM 8-268A diesels, reduction gear, two shafts - diesel direct drive, no steam plant); NHHC Project Hula (wooden-hulled YMS type); GAO HRD-80-2 Navy asbestos-era documentation (see ev-05) [other_primary]

    Finding type

    Finding
A wooden-hulled diesel-powered auxiliary motor minesweeper built 1941-42 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a small diesel combatant of this type and period were engine and exhaust lagging, machinery-space insulation, gaskets, valve packing, electrical insulation, and brake linings on sweep/winch gear. As a diesel direct-drive boat she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply - and her wooden hull and 270-ton size imply materially less installed insulation than a steam-driven steel combatant.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, work package, or builder's spec sheet located for YMS-42. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials; wooden-hulled YMS construction could plausibly carry less asbestos tonnage than steel steam ships, but no quantification or hull record exists. No manufacturer attribution for this hull. Does not establish quantity, individual exposure, or present-day presence.

    Finding
GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - spanning this hull's entire construction (1941-42) and U.S. service era (1942-45).

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, museum/registry record, or docketed case naming USS YMS-42 or T-592 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). Secondary web sweeps surfaced no law-firm marketing claims naming this hull - an unusually clean litigation/name footprint. CAVEAT: CourtListener could not be queried this session - the fleet helper reported the shared pacing budget spent on every attempt across the session (hourly/burst limit); logged as blocked in search_ledger rows sl-09 through sl-12, NOT as a negative result.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1941-42 diesel combatant is era-consistent with installed asbestos materials. The undigitized NARA deck logs (1942-45) and any Soviet-side records are unexamined leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

    Finding
CORRECTION x2. (1) Builder location: NavSource prints 'Wheeler Ship Building Corp., Brooklyn, NY' for this hull, but the Wheeler operation ran two yards - the original Brooklyn plant (Cropsey Avenue, Coney Island) and the wartime Whitestone yard operating as Wheeler Shipbuilding Corp.; the Whitestone production table carries YMS-42 (minesweeper, 278 LDT, 136 ft, delivered 25-Apr-42), corroborated by uboat.net ('Wheeler Shipbuilding Corp., Whitestone, Long Island, New York'). Whitestone, Queens, is the builder location carried. (2) Soviet designation: the same Whitestone table's disposition column prints 'To the USSR 1945 as T-582, scrapped 1956' - 'T-582' is a typo; NHHC's Project Hula appendix, NavSource, and the site's own YMS index all give T-592. The 'scrapped 1956' disposition conflicts with NHHC's '1955-stricken' and NavSource's out-of-service 7 October 1955 - see gaps.

    Limitations
shipbuildinghistory.com is a secondary researcher compilation (Colton), not a primary registry - used here to adjudicate a secondary-source conflict, not as a record source for new claims. Its '278' LDT figure conflicts slightly with NavSource's 270 t. displacement (likely light vs. standard displacement) - unresolved. No asbestos content.
