NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates generally track official records and are corroborated here by uboat.net, the awards manual, NHHC fleet organization, and Special List 44. 'Completed 16 March 1945' is read as the in-commission date (consistent with uboat.net 'Commissioned' and the SL44 log-coverage start). Contains no asbestos content. The WSA-transfer wording is loose - WSA was abolished 1 September 1946, so a January 1948 disposal ran through the successor U.S. Maritime Commission channel (see ev-09).

Secondary compilation - the only located source carrying an 'ordered' date (21 July 1943), which is otherwise uncorroborated. Its launch date (30 Nov 1944) conflicts with NavSource (30 Sep 1944) - carried as a gap. Contains no asbestos content.

Special List 44's ship-number index inventories US Navy deck logs for this hull: 'YMS-429 3/16/1945 12/31/1945'. Deck logs covering commissioning through 31 December 1945 therefore exist in NARA custody (RG 24 deck-log series, College Park).

    Crew (1945 log window)
    Limitations
The dates are log-coverage inventory dates, not asserted commissioning/decommissioning dates - the start coincides with commissioning, and the 31 December 1945 end does not mark end of service: the awards manual (ev-05) documents operations through 28 January 1946 and NavSource dates decommissioning 1 December 1946, so later logs exist but are not itemized for this hull in this index. The deck logs are paper records; the NARA online digitized-deck-log index lists no YMS-429 entry (numbered vessels appear there only under later names, and this hull was never named). Her row carries remark marker '(1)' and no task-force code or commanding-officer entry - the same '(1)' marker appears on the neighboring late-built hulls YMS-421, -423, -424, -426, -427, -428, and -430.

The document's footnote legend defining the '(1)' marker is not rendered on the live NHHC page - the marker is reported verbatim without interpretation. No commanding officer is printed for this hull (NavSource supplies LTJG George A. Stark at commissioning). The official Navy awards list credits YMS-429 with four engagement windows, all under P207 'Minesweeping Operations Pacific' (23 Jun 45 - 2 Mar 46; one star for participation in one or more): 1 Sep 45 - 5 Sep 45 under P207-14 (Arcadia, Kyushu-Korea Area, window 1-7 Sep 45); 18 Oct 45 - 21 Oct 45 under P207-18 (Fukuoka, Kyushu-Korea Area, window 13 Oct 45 - 11 Jan 46); 3 Nov 45 - 27 Dec 45 under P207-18 (Fukuoka); and 13 Jan 46 - 28 Jan 46 under P207-20 (Fusan, Kyushu-Korea Area, window 28 Sep 45 - 29 Jan 46). An award-eligibility list, not a unit history: it documents credited participation windows, not day-by-day activity, position, or task organization. The Naval History Division flagged hundreds of entry errors in this manual for other operations in 1950s correspondence; YMS-429's entries are not individually challenged. Finding
A wooden-hulled diesel-powered auxiliary minesweeper completed March 1945 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. Era-standard applications aboard a small diesel combatant of this type were diesel-exhaust lagging and machinery insulation in the engine space, gaskets and valve packing throughout piping systems, electrical insulation and panelboard, and brake linings on the sweep winch and windlass. As a diesel vessel with a wooden hull she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply, and her asbestos loading would be materially lighter than a steam vessel of the era.

Builder context: William Mojean and Olaf Ericson started the yard in 1925 and closed it at the end of the war; it stood at the extreme inland end of the Thea Foss Waterway, on East D Street between Dock Street and South 21st, Tacoma. The yard table lists YMS 429 with U.S. Official Number 258428, delivery 16-Mar-45, and disposition 'Sold 1947 as Princess Laverne, wrecked in Everett and scrapped' - alongside wartime builds YMS 222-225, PCS 1455-1456, and YMS 426-428 (of which YMS 428 went to the USSR as T-525 in 1945).

    Limitations
Secondary compilations - Colton's list and the Naval Marine Archive page carry identical table data (shared underlying compilation). The 'Sold 1947 ... wrecked in Everett and scrapped' disposition conflicts in detail with NavSource (transferred/sold 23 Jan 1948; 1949 World-Wide Fishing; 1953 Peruvian flag; 'fate unknown') - see ev-09 and gaps. The Official Number 258428 is the merchant-registry number carried post-sale. THREE CONFLICTS carried rather than resolved: (1) Launch date - NavSource prints 30 September 1944, uboat.net prints 30 November 1944; the yard table gives delivery 16-Mar-45 only. (2) Disposal wording - NavSource 'Transferred to the War Shipping Administration 23 January 1948' uses loose wording: WSA was abolished 1 September 1946, so a January 1948 disposal was administered by the successor U.S. Maritime Commission; uboat.net dates the same event 'Sold on 23 January 1948' and the yard table 'Sold 1947'. (3) Final fate - NavSource: 'Fate unknown' after 1953 Peruvian-flag operation; yard table: 'wrecked in Everett and scrapped' - unreconciled.

No registry-level document was located for the striking or disposal event (NVR excludes vessels disposed before 1987; no NVR entry exists; no DANFS entry exists). The discrepancy between the Peruvian-flag operation in 1953 and a wreck/scrapping in Everett is unexplained - possibly sequential (returned to U.S. registry then wrecked) or a table error. Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS YMS-429 was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener: exact-phrase searches 'YMS-429' (opinion index and docket index) and 'USS YMS-429' (docket index) each returned 0 results - verified negatives on both indexes. The 'USS YMS-429' opinion query paced out on the shared fleet budget (~58/hr across sessions) - logged as blocked, not a negative result, and bounded: it is a strict subset of the completed 'YMS-429' opinion query (any document containing 'USS YMS-429' necessarily contains 'YMS-429', which returned 0). Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case and no hull-specific 'asbestos aboard' page for YMS-429 (generic asbestos-ship listicles exist - excluded by source policy).

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard. Three of four CourtListener base queries are verified negatives; the name-opinion query is bounded by the hull-opinion negative but was not itself run - a residual, formally open sliver of the opinion index. The 3/16/1945-12/31/1945 deck logs, builder construction records, and any 1948 disposal/survey files are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
