    Finding
Special List 44 inventories US Navy deck logs for YMS-432 covering 1/1/1945 through 12/31/1945 - the calendar year bracketing her combat-era career: commissioned 30 December 1944 (two days before log coverage begins), carried in the Pacific minecraft organization (Mine Squadron TWENTY) on the 1 May 1945 roster, and through the end of the war year. Coverage ends 12/31/1945 - eleven months before her 1 December 1946 decommissioning; a 1946 log year is not shown in this inventory entry.

    Population
YMS-432 crew, 1945 (log coverage period)
    Limitations
This is an inventory entry, not the logs themselves: it establishes that logbooks exist (RG 24-era custody, NARA) but not their contents - stations, operations, personnel, or any aboard conditions are unread here. YMS-432 does not appear on NARA's digitized deck-log index (archives.gov navy-online page searched 2026-10-04), so the logs are an undigitized archival lead only. Entry verified programmatically on p. 121 of the typeset ship-number PDF (pdftotext extraction): 'YMS-432 1/1/1945 12/31/1945'. The two-day offset between commissioning (30 Dec 1944) and log start (1 Jan 1945), and the absent 1946 log year, are inventory facts not explained by the source.

Pacific Fleet Organization 1 May 1945, Mine Squadron TWENTY YMS block: 'YMS 432 | Lt. R. W. Crippin (USNR)'
    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
The official 1 May 1945 Pacific Fleet organization roster lists 'YMS 432' under Mine Squadron TWENTY (Capt. R. A. Larkin), within the forces of Commander Minecraft, Pacific Fleet, with commanding officer 'Lt. R. W. Crippin (USNR)' - matching the NavSource commanding-officer listing (LTJG Robert W. Crippin; the roster's 'Lt.' vs NavSource's 'LTJG' is a rank wording variant). YMS-432's row carries no footnote marker and no number in the pre-name column; the (1) marker appears on roster-mates 412, 421, 423-430, 433-437, 440, 441, 445 (and on 475, 477, 478 later in the list) but is absent on hers - a pattern shared with rows 414-418, 431, 442, and 443. This is the only operational-status documentation located between commissioning (30 Dec 1944) and disposal.

The pre-name column (numbers such as 11, 14, 94, 96 on other rows) and the (1) footnote's legend were not resolved this session; the absence of both on this hull's row is recorded, not interpreted. Finding
The official CINCPOA report's Appendix III ('Typhoon Damage at Okinawa. Based Upon Progress Reports to 19 November') names 18 YMS hulls among the typhoon casualties of 9 October 1945 - including Mine Squadron TWENTY roster-mate YMS 424 ('Grounded - Beyond economical salvage'). YMS-432 does NOT appear anywhere in the damage listing: she was not a recorded casualty of Typhoon Louise at Okinawa.

Absence from a damage appendix establishes only that she was not a recorded typhoon casualty - it does not establish where she was on 9 October 1945 (not every squadron hull was at Okinawa; her station that day is undocumented in located sources). The undigitized deck logs (SL44 coverage runs through 12/31/1945) are the open lead. No asbestos content.

'Sold on 22 January 1948' vs NavSource's 'transferred to the War Shipping Administration 22 January 1948' is a wording variant on the same disposal event (shipbuildinghistory likewise tabulates 'Sold 1948'). The Tacoma Boatbuilding yard table carries this hull: 'YMS 432 - US Navy - Minesweeper - 278 [GT] - 136 [ft] - 30-Dec-44 [delivery] - Sold 1948' - corroborating builder, completion/delivery date, and 1948 disposal. Yard history: 'Tacoma Boatbuilding Company was established in 1926 and built many boats in WWII. It grew rapidly in the 70s and early 80s but got into difficulty with several large government contracts and filed for Chapter 11 protection in 1985. It emerged from bankruptcy in 1986 but could not recover and closed in 1992. The facility, which was at 1840 Marine View Drive, was liquidated in 1998.'

    vessel_history
    Finding
The YMS type was a wood-hulled, diesel-powered inshore minesweeper designed by Henry B. Nevins, Inc. (YMS-1 laid down 4 March 1941 at City Island, NY); 561 were built at 35 yacht yards - 12 East Coast, 19 West Coast, 4 Great Lakes - with 481 completed. YMS-135 through YMS-445 (plus 480-481) were the single-stack variant, which includes YMS-432. The index records the class loss context: 'One of their greatest losses being on 9 October 1945, when seven U.S. YMS' were sunk in a typhoon off Okinawa.' Surviving YMSs still in naval service were reclassified AMS and named in 1947 - YMS-432, stricken 25 February 1947 and already leaving naval custody, was not among them and received no AMS designation or name.

    asbestos_application
    Finding
A wooden-hulled diesel yard minesweeper built 1944 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a small diesel craft of this type were diesel-exhaust lagging, machinery gaskets, valve packing, electrical insulation, and winch/windlass brake linings in confined below-deck spaces. As a diesel vessel she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply, and the wooden hull means no hull-insulation pathway of steel combatants; residual exposure pathways are machinery-space and maintenance-disturbance.

No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or environmental assessment naming USS YMS-432 was found in the public sources searched; no DANFS entry exists (NavSource states none; NHHC DANFS URLs return 404); no NVR detail page exists (vessel stricken 1947, outside NVR coverage; SHIPDETAILS URL redirects to the NVR root); the deck logs themselves are undigitized. CourtListener: all four prescribed base queries were attempted through the authenticated helper and every attempt was deferred by the shared fleet pacing budget (~58/hr across all running sessions) on 5 tries over ~30 minutes - logged blocked in search_ledger rows sl-uss-yms-432-13 through -16; litigation status is an open gap, not a negative result.

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - WWII-era diesel auxiliaries still carried asbestos in some components (gaskets, electrical insulation, brake linings); it establishes only that nothing ship-specific is published. The hull's material fate after the 1984 de-documentation is unrecorded - she received no material or environmental survey in located records at Navy disposal (1948), merchant conversion (1949), or de-documentation (1984).
