    Finding
Special List 44 inventories US Navy deck logs for YMS-433 covering 2/13/1945 through 6/30/1945 - coverage opening on her completion/commissioning date (13 February 1945) and closing fourteen months before her striking (28 August 1946). The 4.5-month window spans her shakedown and transit period and the final months of the Pacific war; a post-June-1945 log series is not shown in this inventory entry even though the hull remained in service through mid-1946 (the NAVPERS engagement-star list credits September 1945 minesweeping operations that postdate the inventory's log window).

    Population
    YMS-433 crew, February-June 1945 (log coverage period)
    Limitations
This is an inventory entry, not the logs themselves: it establishes that logbooks exist (RG 24-era custody, NARA) but not their contents - stations, operations, personnel, or any aboard conditions are unread here. YMS-433 does not appear on NARA's digitized deck-log index (archives.gov navy-online page searched 2026-10-04; ~19 numbered YMS hulls listed, YMS-433 absent), so the logs are an undigitized archival lead only. Entry verified programmatically on p. 121 of the typeset ship-number PDF (pdftotext -layout extraction): 'YMS-433 2/13/1945 6/30/1945'. The absence of any post-June-1945 coverage for a hull in service until August 1946 is an inventory fact not explained by the source.

    Limitations
NavSource is a compiled secondary archive of official data, not the underlying registers; the FLC transfer and 'fate unknown' rest on this source alone among those located (shipbuildinghistory's 'To the Philippines 1946 as a patrol boat' is a related but differently-worded disposal claim - see gaps). No decommissioning date is given. Contains no asbestos information. Operational stations between completion and disposal are not listed - service detail is undocumented in located sources.

    vessel_history
    Finding
The official 1 May 1945 Pacific Fleet organization roster lists 'YMS 433' in the YMS block under Mine Squadron TWENTY (Capt. R. A. Larkin), within the forces of Commander Minecraft, Pacific Fleet (Rear Admiral A. Sharp) - the same squadron as sister YMS-432. YMS-433's row carries the (1) footnote marker and the no-name marker ('..........') in the commanding-officer column, and no division number in the pre-name column. This is the only unit-assignment documentation located between commissioning (13 Feb 1945) and disposal.

The (1) footnote's legend and the pre-name column's division numbering were not resolved in the document; their presence on this hull's row is recorded, not interpreted. Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
The official awards manual's per-ship engagement-star list credits 'YMS 433' with two qualifying windows under code P207, 'Minesweeping Operations Pacific': 4 Sep 45 - 8 Sep 45 and 11 Sep 45 - 14 Sep 45. The bare P207 code - without a sub-operation suffix (P207-1 Tsugaru Straits through P207-28 Yangtze River Approaches) - denotes participation in the general Pacific minesweeping window (23 Jun 45 - 2 Mar 46) rather than a named sub-location; only 1 star was authorized for participation in one or more P207 operations. This is the only operation-specific ship record located: the hull was sweeping mines in Pacific waters in the weeks immediately following the Japanese surrender (2 September 1945).

    Limitations
Documents engagement-star qualifying windows, not which sweep area she worked - the bare P207 credit does not assign a named sub-location, and no station, port, or task-unit record was located. The source is an awards-eligibility list, not an operations log; dates describe qualifying participation windows. An independent transcription of the same NAVPERS 15,790 ship table (officialmilitaryribbons.com, commercial reseller - not cited per source policy) shows identical dates. No asbestos content.

    Finding
The official CINCPOA report's Appendix III ('Typhoon Damage at Okinawa. Based Upon Progress Reports to 19 November') names 18 YMS hulls among the typhoon casualties of 9 October 1945 - including Mine Squadron TWENTY roster-mate YMS 424 ('Grounded - Beyond economical salvage'). YMS-433 does NOT appear anywhere in the damage listing: she was not a recorded casualty of Typhoon Louise at Okinawa.

Absence from a damage appendix establishes only that she was not a recorded typhoon casualty - it does not establish where she was on 9 October 1945 (not every squadron hull was at Okinawa; her station that day is undocumented in located sources). The undigitized deck logs (SL44 coverage ends 6/30/1945, before the event) do not resolve it. Finding
The Tacoma Boatbuilding yard table carries this hull: 'YMS 433 - US Navy - Minesweeper - 278 [GT] - 136 [ft] - 13-Feb-45 [delivery] - To the Philippines 1946 as a patrol boat' - corroborating builder and completion/delivery date, and carrying the only located statement of post-Navy disposition (Philippine patrol-boat service, 1946). Yard history: 'Tacoma Boatbuilding Company was established in 1926 and built many boats in WWII. It grew rapidly in the 70s and early 80s but got into difficulty with several large government contracts and filed for Chapter 11 protection in 1985. It emerged from bankruptcy in 1986 but could not recover and closed in 1992. The facility, which was at 1840 Marine View Drive, was liquidated in 1998.'

    Limitations
Secondary compiled yard table, not a contract or transfer record; the table's 278 is a gross-tonnage figure - distinct from NavSource's 270-ton displacement, not a conflict. 'To the Philippines 1946 as a patrol boat' is consistent with FLC surplus-disposal practice (the 11 September 1946 U.S.-Philippine surplus-property agreement, ratified as Philippine Republic Act No. 33) but no Philippine name, pennant, operator, or service record is documented for this hull in located sources - the claim rests on this table alone. vessel_history
    Finding
The YMS type was a wood-hulled, diesel-powered inshore minesweeper designed by Henry B. Nevins, Inc. (YMS-1 laid down 4 March 1941 at City Island, NY); 561 were built at 35 yacht yards - 12 East Coast, 19 West Coast, 4 Great Lakes - with 481 completed. YMS-135 through YMS-445 (plus 480-481) were the single-stack variant, which includes YMS-433. The index records the class loss context: 'One of their greatest losses being on 9 October 1945, when seven U.S. YMS' were sunk in a typhoon off Okinawa.' Surviving YMSs still in naval service were reclassified AMS and named in 1947 - YMS-433, stricken 28 August 1946 and already leaving naval custody, was not among them and received no AMS designation or name.

    Finding
A wooden-hulled diesel yard minesweeper built 1944-45 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a small diesel craft of this type were diesel-exhaust lagging, machinery gaskets, valve packing, electrical insulation, and winch/windlass brake linings in confined below-deck spaces. As a diesel vessel she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply, and the wooden hull means no hull-insulation pathway of steel combatants; residual exposure pathways are machinery-space and maintenance-disturbance.
