    Finding
Special List 44 inventories US Navy deck logs for YMS-438 covering 10/26/1944 through 6/30/1945. The 10/26/1944 start matches the NavSource commissioning date (26 October 1944) exactly, independently corroborating it over the uboat.net 'Commissioned 25 Oct 1944' variant. The 6/30/1945 end is the standard SL44 inventory cutoff shared by most WWII hulls in this accession - it is not evidence that service ended then (she served to January 1947).

    Limitations
This is an inventory entry, not the logs themselves: it establishes that logbooks exist (RG 24-era custody, NARA) but not their contents - stations, operations, personnel, or any aboard conditions are unread here. YMS-438 does not appear on NARA's digitized deck-log index (archives.gov navy-online page searched 2026-10-04 - only ~19 numbered YMS hulls are listed), so the logs are an undigitized archival lead only. Entry verified programmatically on p. 121 of the typeset ship-number PDF (pdftotext extraction): 'YMS-438 10/26/1944 6/30/1945'.

    Limitations
NavSource is a compiled secondary archive of official data, not the underlying registers; the builder name here ('Robert Jacobs, Inc.') conflicts with the yard-specialist spelling 'Robert Jacob, Inc.' used by shipbuildinghistory, uboat.net, and NavSource's own class-index photo caption (see gaps). Contains no asbestos information. Wartime stations between commissioning and the November 1945 Kobe window are not listed - operational service detail is undocumented in located sources except the official awards-manual eligibility listing (ev-04).

    Finding
The official NHHC photographic record catalogs image NH 79715 of this hull 'In San Francisco Bay, 1945-1946' - placing the ship in San Francisco Bay during 1945-46, consistent with a Pacific transit between East Coast completion (October 1944) and the documented Kobe (Honshu) minesweeping window (28 Nov 1945 - 2 Mar 1946, ev-04). The same image appears on the NavSource page captioned 'c. 1945, San Francisco Bay, Passing under the Golden Gate bridge' (credited there to Robert Hurst).

A cataloged photograph establishes presence in San Francisco Bay on an unstated date within 1945-46, not a station assignment or transit record - the '1945-1946' caption window brackets but does not date a passage. No asbestos content. NavSource and NHHC credit different donors for the image (Robert Hurst vs D.M. McPherson, 1974).

    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
The official Navy awards manual lists this hull by name: 'YMS 438: 28 Nov 45 - 2 Mar 46, P207-9' - eligibility for an engagement star under operation P207-9, which the manual's Part III authorized-operations list defines as 'Kobe (Honshu Area) 28Nov45-9Mar46' within 'Minesweeping Operations Pacific.' This is an official ship-specific operational record: the ship performed post-surrender minesweeping service in the Kobe (Honshu) area from 28 November 1945 to 2 March 1946. Neighboring hulls in the same listing show distinct operation assignments (e.g., YMS 436: 20 Dec 45-2 Mar 46 P207-9; YMS 439: P207-10/P207-18), so the listing is hull-resolved, not a squadron-level carryover.

    Limitations
Establishes official engagement-star eligibility for the named Kobe operation window - presence and participation in post-surrender minesweeping in that area - but not day-by-day stations or tasks within it. Eligibility windows are award determinations, not continuous presence proofs; the ship's actual in-area days are not broken out. No asbestos content. HyperWar/ibiblio is a faithful transcription mirror of the published Navy manual; the underlying document is NAVPERS 15,790 (Rev. 1953).

    vessel_history
    Finding
The YMS type was a wood-hulled, diesel-powered inshore minesweeper designed by Henry B. Nevins, Inc. (YMS-1 laid down 4 March 1941 at City Island, NY); 561 were built at 35 yacht yards - 12 East Coast, 19 West Coast, 4 Great Lakes - with 481 completed. YMS-135 through YMS-445 (plus 480-481) were the single-stack variant, which includes YMS-438. Surviving YMSs still in naval service were reclassified AMS and given names in 1947; YMS-438, decommissioned 1 January 1947 and struck 5 March 1947, was not among them and received no AMS designation or name. The index page itself carries a July 1944 photograph of this hull's builder - 'the Robert Jacob Shipyard, City Island, NY' - showing YMS craft under construction.

    Finding
A wooden-hulled diesel yard minesweeper built 1943-44 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a small diesel craft of this type were diesel-exhaust lagging, machinery gaskets, valve packing, electrical insulation, and winch/windlass brake linings in confined below-deck spaces. As a diesel vessel she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply, and the wooden hull means no hull-insulation pathway of steel combatants; residual exposure pathways are machinery-space and maintenance-disturbance.

No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or environmental assessment naming USS YMS-438 was found in the public sources searched; no DANFS entry exists (NavSource states none; NHHC DANFS URLs return 404); no NVR detail page exists (vessel stricken 1947, outside NVR coverage; SHIPDETAILS URL bounces to the NVR root); the deck logs themselves are undigitized; and the hull is absent from the 1 May 1945 Pacific Fleet organization roster (YMS 430-437 and YMS 440+ are listed - she had not yet joined the Pacific Fleet by that date). CourtListener: one of four base queries completed - 'USS YMS-438' opinion returned 2 hits, both non-qualifying name collisions (United States v. Standard Oil Co., S.D.N.Y. 1948, the YMS-12 collision admiralty case; Tyrone Berry v. State, Tex. App. 2015, an OCR-garbled criminal appeal with no vessel connection); the remaining three base queries stayed fleet-paced across ~60 min of spaced retries and are open gaps, not negative results (sl-15 through sl-17).

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - WWII-era diesel auxiliaries still carried asbestos in some components (gaskets, electrical insulation, brake linings); it establishes only that nothing ship-specific is published. The litigation repository search is a genuine open gap (fleet-paced, not run). The hull left federal documentation in 1978 with no material or environmental survey in located records.
