- NavSource record for this hull: laid down 24 November 1943 by Robert Jacob(s) Inc., City Island, NY; launched 28 October 1944; completed 29 December 1944; struck from the Navy Register 28 August 1946; transferred to the State Department Foreign Liquidation Commission 21 October 1947 and sold; fate unknown. Call sign Nan-Charlie-How-How. Specifications: displacement 270 t.; length 136'; beam 24'6"; draft 8'; speed 13 kts.; complement 50; armament one 3"/50 dual-purpose mount and two 20mm mounts; propulsion two 880bhp General Motors 8-268A diesel engines, Snow and Knobstedt single reduction gear, two shafts. A photo caption places the ship at Subic Bay, Philippines, 6 June 1946 with LTJG James Rice, USNR, as commanding officer. Page states 'There is no DANFS History currently available for YMS-440.'

- Robert Jacob Inc. construction trades (1943-44); commissioned crew (~50, NavSource figure)
- Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - its milestone dates generally track NVR/DANFS. It records 'completed,' not a commissioning ceremony date; the 29 December 1944 date is corroborated by uboat.net ('commissioned') and by NARA deck-log coverage beginning 30 December 1944. Contains no asbestos or material content. The Subic Bay photograph is captioned 6 June 1946 - after the log coverage inventoried in Special List 44 ends (30 June 1945) - so her 1945-46 movements are not documented in the sources searched.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- Special List 44 inventories U.S. Navy deck logs for YMS-440 covering 12/30/1944-6/30/1945 - the only ship-specific primary record located for this hull, and corroboration of her late-December 1944 in-service date. The post-1941 deck logs are held at the National Archives at College Park (Archives II); YMS-440 does not appear in NARA's list of deck logs available online in the National Archives Catalog, so the coverage is paper-only at this writing.

- Limitations
- Log coverage dates are inventory dates, not asserted commissioning/decommissioning dates - coverage stops at the 6/30/1945 boundary common to the WWII log run, not at end of service. The logs' contents (ports, operations, crew, any casualties) have not been examined; they are an archival lead, not an analyzed source. No asbestos content - deck logs record operations, not materials.

- Finding
- Class context for this hull: the YMS type was a wooden-hulled motor minesweeper designed by Henry B. Nevins, Inc. of City Island, NY (YMS-1 keel laid 4 March 1941); 561 were built at 35 yacht yards rather than large shipyards (12 East Coast, 19 West Coast, four Great Lakes). YMS-135 through YMS-445 (plus 480-481) were the single-stack subclass - YMS-440 falls inside this group. Class specifications: 136' overall, 24'6" beam, 6'1" max draft, complement 33, designed speed 12 knots, two General Motors 8-268A diesel engines, two shafts. Surviving YMSs were reclassified AMS and given names in 1947 (MSC(O) in 1955) - YMS-440 was struck 28 August 1946, before the naming program, and never carried a name. The index page includes a photograph of the Robert Jacob Shipyard, City Island, circa July 1944 showing YMS minesweepers under construction.

- Finding
- The builder's yard list carries this hull: 'YMS 440 | US Navy | Minesweeper | 29-Dec-44 | Sold 1947' inside Robert Jacob's final YMS block (YMS-438 through YMS-441). Yard context: the yard was established in the 1850s (George W. Horton), bought by Robert Jacob in 1900, built subchasers in WWI, yachts between the wars, and was sold to Consolidated Shipbuilding in 1946 - a small wooden-vessel yacht yard, not an industrial shipyard.

- asbestos_application
- Finding
- A wooden-hulled diesel-powered motor minesweeper built 1943-44 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. Era-standard applications aboard a small diesel combatant of this type and period were: lagging on diesel exhaust lines and muffler, gaskets and valve packing in the machinery spaces, electrical/cable insulation, brake linings on the anchor windlass and winches, and insulation around galley ranges and hot-water piping. As a diesel vessel she carried no boilers or steam system - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply. The small, confined below-deck volume of a 136-foot wooden sweeper concentrates any machinery-space exposure pathway.

[8]armedconflicts.com vessel entry for YMS-440 (aggregator) vs. NavSource 11/19440.htm, uboat.net ship/9859, and shipbuildinghistory Robert Jacob yard list [other_primary]

- Finding type

- Finding
- CORRECTION: the armedconflicts.com aggregator attributes this hull to 'Wheeler Shipbuilding Corp. (Whitestone, Long Island, New York).' That attribution is contradicted by three independent secondary sources that agree with each other - NavSource ('Robert Jacobs, Inc., City Island, NY'), uboat.net ('Robert Jacob Inc., City Island'), and the shipbuildinghistory Robert Jacob yard list (which lists 'YMS 440 ... 29-Dec-44 ... Sold 1947' in the yard's YMS-438-441 block). Wheeler Shipbuilding built a different YMS block; the correct builder is Robert Jacob Inc., City Island.

- Finding type

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or litigation naming YMS-440 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). There is no DANFS entry for this hull; the NVR does not cover pre-1987 disposals; the deck logs inventoried in SL44 are undigitized. CourtListener: two of four base queries ran ('"YMS-440"' opinion, count=71; '"USS YMS-440"' docket, count=825 - every hit a tokenization collision, zero naming the vessel); the remaining two ('"USS YMS-440"' opinion; '"YMS-440"' docket) were blocked all session by the spent fleet pacing budget - logged as blocked, not as negative results. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case and no primary-sourced 'asbestos aboard' material naming this hull.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the ship's era-consistent materials are an inference, the vessel's post-sale fate is unknown so no disposal-stage record exists, and two of four CourtListener base queries remain unrun (blocked; the two that ran cover the same token set and returned only collisions, but the blocked pair is still logged as an open gap). Does not establish that asbestos is or is not present; does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
