[4]Shipbuilding History (njscuba.net mirror of shipbuildinghistory.com), Greenport Basin & Construction Co. production table - PCS-1408/YMS-455 row and sister hulls [other_primary]
- Locator
- Greenport Basin & Construction Co. yard page, hull production table rows PCS-1406 through PCS-1412/PCS-1419
- Finding type

- Finding
- The builder's production table records PCS-1408 (type 'subchaser', 278d tons, 136 ft) delivered 21 July 1944 'completed as YMS-455, to the USSR 1945 as T-190, SBR-124 1958, struck 1959.' The same table documents the Greenport near-sisters' parallel fates: PCS-1406 delivered 27 June 1944 'completed as YMS-453, to the USSR 1945 as T-189, SBR-123 1958, struck 1959'; PCS-1419 delivered 21 August 1944 'completed as YMS-456, to the USSR 1945 as T-191, scrapped 1958'; PCS-1410 delivered 13 September 1944 'completed as YMS-457, to the USSR 1945 as T-192, SBR-125 1958, struck 1959'; and PCS-1407 'completed as YMS-454, lost in typhoon off Okinawa Oct-45.' Yard context: Greenport Basin & Construction was a mid-19th-century fishing-vessel and yacht builder that expanded into steel boatbuilding in WWII.

Russell, 'Project Hula: Secret Soviet-American Cooperation in the War Against Japan,' Naval Historical Center, Department of the Navy, 1997 (U.S. Navy in the Modern World Series no. 4), appendix: U.S. Navy Combatant Ships Transferred to the USSR Under Project HULA, May-September 1945 [other_primary]

- Russell, Project Hula, Appendix table 'U.S. Navy Combatant Ships Transferred to the USSR Under Project HULA, May-September 1945' (YMS/Soviet T-number mapping and transfer dates)
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- CORRECTION against a plausible wrong inference: YMS-455's 30 May 1945 Soviet transfer was NOT a Project Hula Cold Bay event. The official Naval Historical Center study's appendix lists all 149 ships transferred at Cold Bay - including 31 YMS hulls (YMS-33, 38, 42, 59, 75, 85, 88, 100, 135, 139, 143, 144, 145, 178, 180, 184, 216, 237, 241, 260, 266, 272, 273, 285, 287, 288, 295, 301, 332, 428, 435) - and YMS-455 is not among them. Hula ships went to the Soviet Pacific Fleet; YMS-455 went to the Black Sea Fleet (arriving Sevastopol 21 July 1945, consistent with an Atlantic-route delivery, not a Cold Bay-to-Pacific transfer). Her transfer was a separate lend-lease delivery whose port of handover is not stated in the located sources.

- The appendix establishes absence from the Cold Bay program only - it does not identify the actual transfer location, which remains an open gap. Sister hulls YMS-453 (24 May 1945), YMS-456, and YMS-457 are likewise absent from the Hula list; Black Sea Fleet assignment is independently documented for YMS-453 (NavSource) but not verified for YMS-456/457. [7]Designation cross-check: NavSource milestone line (reclassified YMS-455, 27 September 1943, before 13 November 1943 launch and 21 July 1944 completion) vs secondary sources' 'former name PCS-1408' phrasing (uboat.net) and 'laid down as PCS-1408' scope note [other_primary]
- Locator
- NavSource 11/19455.htm milestone list; uboat.net 9871 'Former name' field
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- CORRECTION of a common phrasing error: PCS-1408 was a pre-commissioning hull designation, not a former name. She was laid down 21 August 1943 as Patrol Craft Sweeper PCS-1408 (PCS-1376 design), reclassified Auxiliary Motor Minesweeper YMS-455 on 27 September 1943 - before her 13 November 1943 launch and 21 July 1944 completion - and commissioned as YMS-455. She never served as USS PCS-1408. Sources calling PCS-1408 a 'former name' (e.g., uboat.net's 'Former name PCS-1408') are imprecise.

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- A wooden-hulled diesel-powered minesweeper built 1943-44 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard small-craft applications aboard a vessel of this type and period were engine and exhaust insulation, gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation. As a diesel craft she carried no steam plant - the boiler and steam-pipe lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply, and the hull's wooden construction eliminated structural asbestos millboard uses typical of steel hulls.

[10]Batch-8326 CourtListener sweep via fleet helper cl-auth-search.py (authenticated, fleet-paced): base queries "YMS-455" opinion (type=o) and docket (type=r); companion "USS YMS-455" exact-name variants [court_record]
- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-uss-yms-455-10 through -13
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- CourtListener opinion search for "YMS-455" (type=o, limit 20) returned zero results - no opinion text names this hull. The exact-name opinion query "USS YMS-455" was not run because it is a strict subset of the zero-result hull-number query (every 'USS YMS-455' hit contains 'YMS-455'); zero is implied, not independently verified. The docket (type=r) base query could not be executed this session: the fleet-wide request pacer returned its stand-down signal on five attempts spaced across the session; it is logged as blocked, not as a negative result. No qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull surfaced in secondary web sweeps.

- Limitations
- Zero opinion results + one blocked docket search do not prove absence of litigation - dockets were not verified this session, and the exact-name docket variant remains unrun. YMS-455's ~10-month U.S. career ending in Soviet transfer makes U.S. asbestos litigation naming her unlikely but not impossible. Deck logs and builder work packages are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, insulation material list, or verified litigation naming YMS-455 or PCS-1408 was found in the public sources searched. - Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1943-44 Navy build inside the documented asbestos era makes era-typical materials plausible, and the CourtListener docket repository was not verified this session (blocked, see ev-09). Soviet-era maintenance and disposal records are not in U.S. repositories. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
