Holland, USNR'; decommissioned 1 December 1946; struck from the Naval Register 25 February 1947; transferred to the War Shipping Administration 26 September 1947; registered 1948 to Elmer C. Jakeway, Jr., of Ketchikan, AK as the freighter El Clare; registered 1956 to the Brunswick Navigation Co. of Southport, NC as the fishing boat John M. Morehead out of Wilmington, NC; acquired 1967 by Standard Products, Inc. of Kilmarnock, VA for use as a fishing boat; abandoned in 1978. Spec block: displacement 270 t., length 136 ft, beam 24 ft 6 in, draft 8 ft, speed 15 kts, complement 32; armament one 3"/50 dual-purpose mount, two 20mm mounts, two depth-charge projectors; propulsion two General Motors 8-268A diesel engines, Snow and Knobstedt single-reduction gear, two shafts. Page classifies the hull as 'PCS-1376 Class Patrol Craft Sweeper/YMS-1 Class Auxiliary Motor Minesweeper.'

    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - but it is the most complete located milestone record for this unnamed numbered hull. Its own text is internally inconsistent on the reclassification ('Laid down ... as PCS-1411' on 3 Dec 1943 vs reclassification to YMS-458 listed 26 Sep 1943, before keel-laying; see gaps). Contains no asbestos or material content. 'Abandoned in 1978' conflicts with Colton's 'scrapped 1978' (see gaps). The only photograph on the page depicts sister YMS-404, not this hull.

    Finding

Morehead identity, and a 1978 end recorded as 'scrapped' (NavSource: 'abandoned').

Standard secondary shipbuilding-history compilation (drawn from merchant-vessel registry and yard records); 'Sub Chaser' is the table's generic PCS-type label, and 'scrapped 1978' conflicts with NavSource's 'abandoned in 1978' - final disposition form is unresolved. No asbestos content.

    Finding
uboat.net corroborates the milestone spine with one additional data point - 'Ordered 16 Nov 1942' (the contract date, not in NavSource) - and lists 'Commissioned 9 Oct 1944,' which appears to carry the completion date as commissioning (NavSource distinguishes completed 9 Oct, commissioned 10 Oct). Also corroborates builder, laid down 3 Dec 1943, launched 12 Feb 1944, stricken 25 Feb 1947, sold 26 Sep 1947, former name PCS-1411.

[7]Era inference built on: NavSource spec block (two GM 8-268A diesels, two shafts; 136-ft YMS-1 class); class documentation that YMS-1-class hulls were wood-hulled, diesel-powered auxiliary motor minesweepers built largely by yacht and fishing-vessel yards for non-magnetic mine work; GAO HRD-80-2 (see ev-07) [other_primary]
    Locator

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
A wood-hulled, diesel-powered YMS-1-class minesweeper built 1943-44 sits inside the Navy's asbestos-insulation era, but the asbestos-relevant load aboard this type is small relative to steam tonnage: no boilers, no steam lines, no turbine lagging. Era-standard applications on a diesel minesweeper of this size were diesel exhaust lagging, machinery gaskets and valve packing, and electrical insulation; wood hull construction eliminates hull insulation runs. Any asbestos aboard would have been confined to machinery-space components and fittings.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation list, material schedule, or work package was located for YMS-458. Names era-standard applications for the type, not confirmed installed materials aboard this hull; no quantity. Product names are normalized era terms; no manufacturer attribution.

    Finding
GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - spanning this hull's entire construction (1943-44) and service era (1944-46).

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, material schedule, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or litigation naming YMS-458 (or its PCS-1411, El Clare, or John M. Morehead identities) was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener ran clean: all four authenticated base queries ('USS YMS-458' opinion and docket, 'YMS-458' opinion and docket) returned count 0 on 2026-10-04 - no docketed case or opinion names this hull. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no asbestos or litigation content at all - the hull is absent even from law-firm ship-listicle marketing.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - wooden hulls of this type still carried asbestos-containing gaskets, packing, and lagging in machinery spaces. Undigitized deck logs, BuShips work packages, and merchant-registry files are open leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
