Soviet-service detail for this hull: 'Patrol Craft Sweeper PCS-1432 was laid down 14.05.1943 at Gibbs Gas Engine Co. in Jacksonville, USA. On 27.09.1943 reclassified (Auxiliary Motor Minesweeper) and renamed YMS-464. Launched 09.12.1943, entered service 13.06.1944. On 25.10.1944 the ship received the new name T-188. On 15.05.1945 the ship was accepted by a Soviet crew against Lend-Lease deliveries; on 21.07.1945 arrived at Sevastopol and on 04.08.1945 was included in the Black Sea Fleet. On 28.01.1958 the ship was disarmed and excluded from the Navy list in connection with transfer to the stock-property department (OFI).' Soviet-side specs: displacement 320 t.; 41.45 m x 7.46 m x 3.87 m; 12 kts; range 2,030 mi at 9.2 kts; 2x GM 8-268A diesels 880 hp, 2 shafts; 1x 76.2mm, 2x 20mm, 2 depth-charge throwers, 1 electromagnetic sweep, 1 acoustic sweep; crew 33. Russian-language secondary compilation, not an official Soviet/Russian archive publication. The 15 May 1945 transfer, 4 August 1945 Black Sea Fleet assignment, and 28 January 1958 out-of-service dates cross-confirm NavSource; the 25 October 1944 Soviet-designation allocation and the 21 July 1945 Sevastopol arrival are duplicated verbatim by sewar.ru (ev-12) - a shared underlying Soviet-list source, not independent corroboration. 'Accepted by a Soviet crew' places the handover on the US side (consistent with the veteran account in ev-11) but the port is unnamed. No asbestos content. Verified live 2026-10-04 (HTTP 200).

CORRECTION against the natural wrong attribution: this hull's 15 May 1945 Soviet transfer was NOT a Project Hula / Cold Bay transfer. The NHHC-published appendix enumerates every combatant transferred at Cold Bay - 28 frigates, 24 Admirable-class minesweepers (AM), 30 LCI(L)s, 31 YMS-type motor minesweepers, 56 SC subchasers, 4 YR workshops - and YMS-464 appears nowhere in it (the Cold Bay YMS were YMS-143/-144/-428/-435/-145/-59/-38/-42/-75/-139/-178/-184/-216/-237/-241/-272/-273/-295/-260/-33/-85/-100/-266/-288/-301/-88/-180/-135/-332/-285/-287, receiving T-52x/T-58x/T-59x/T-60x/T-61x designations). YMS-464 instead received T-188 and joined the Black Sea Fleet - consistent with a direct Lend-Lease handover in US waters and an Atlantic transit (Soviet crew acceptance 'in America' per ev-02/ev-11; Sevastopol arrival 21 July 1945). Sister YMS-465 (T-187) and YMS-466 (T-192) made the same Black Sea passage; YMS-469 (T-186) went to the Soviet Northern Pacific Fleet.

Negative-presence reasoning: absence from the NHHC appendix excludes the Cold Bay channel but does not itself document where the handover occurred - the Atlantic route is inferred from the Black Sea Fleet destination and the 'accepted by a Soviet crew in America' accounts, not from a named transfer port. The museum's postmark holdings document a Locy Type 'FAKE' (USCS catalog illus. Y-6, the YMS-111 fake type) postmark dated 1944-06-13 purporting to mark this hull - i.e., a fraudulent philatelic item exists and should not be cited as evidence of a 13 June 1944 commissioning ceremony.

    Finding
The Gibbs yard build table documents the contract block: 'PC 1432-1440, US Navy, Sub Chaser - Completed as YMS 464-472 (see below)' - i.e., all nine hulls of the PCS-1432 batch left the yard as YMS-464 through YMS-472. The same table gives YMS-464 delivery 13-Jun-44 and disposition 'To the USSR 1945 as T-190, scrapped 1954' - while the site's own Yard Minesweepers table at njscuba.net lists 'YMS-464 ... to the USSR (T-188) 1945.' The source is internally inconsistent on the Soviet designation (T-190 vs T-188); the T-188 identity is carried in this record because it is corroborated by NavSource, kchf.ru, and the Meister-derived T-number concordance (Axis History Forum compilation). T-190 in the corroborated concordance belongs to YMS-455. 'Scrapped 1954' likewise conflicts with the 1958 Soviet out-of-service date - both variants logged in gaps. Yard history: Gibbs Gas Engine Works founded 1911; prolific builder of engines and small wooden/steel vessels in both World Wars; renamed Gibbs Corporation post-war, sold to Aerojet-General 1964, Fruehauf 1969, Terex 1989, closed 1992; yard stood at the east end of Prudential Drive, Jacksonville.

    Finding
A wood-hulled, diesel-driven motor minesweeper built 1943-44 falls inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era, but the exposure profile differs from steam vessels: with no steam plant there is no boiler/turbine lagging pathway, and the wooden hull removes the structural fireproofing pathway of steel construction. Era-standard applications aboard a small diesel minecraft of this period were engine-exhaust lagging, machinery insulation around the engine space, gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation. The asbestos-relevant populations are the Gibbs construction trades (1943-44), the brief USN crew (June 1944 - May 1945), and the Soviet crew and Black Sea Fleet maintenance personnel (1945-58) - the last in a documentation void for US-source purposes.
