- Finding
- YMS-468 was laid down 12 June 1943 as Patrol Craft Sweeper PCS-1436 by Gibbs Gas Engine Co., Jacksonville, FL; reclassified as Auxiliary Motor Minesweeper YMS-468 on 27 September 1943 (before launching); launched 23 March 1944; commissioned 31 August 1944; struck from the Naval list 19 February 1948; transferred to Turkey 10 May 1948 and renamed TCG Kusadashi (M 514); fate unknown. Specifications: 270 t displacement, 136 ft length, 24 ft 6 in beam, 8 ft draft, 15 kts, complement 32; armament one 3-inch/50 dual-purpose mount, two 20mm mounts, two depth-charge projectors; propulsion two 880 bhp General Motors 8-268A diesel engines with Snow and Knobstedt single reduction gear, two shafts. The page states there is no DANFS history available for YMS-468. Commanding officers listed: LTJG Ed Leach, USNR (August 1944); LTJG Alfred B. Wiles, USNR (1945). Photographs place the ship at Sasebo, Japan, c. September 1945.

- Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer-curated photo archive, not an official Navy record; dates are consistent with the uboat.net secondary compilation and with the official Ships' Data 1945 tabulation (ev-uss-yms-468-02). The page contains no asbestos information and establishes nothing about materials, exposure, or any individual. Complement figure cannot be verified against DANFS because no DANFS entry exists.

- Finding
- The official BuShips tabulation lists YMS468 at 136 ft 0 in length, 24 ft 6 in breadth, 1,000 shaft horsepower, built by Gibbs Gas Engine Co., Jacksonville, Fla., remark 'Ex-PCS1436.' Every row in the YMS table carries footnote 1, 'Wood construction,' and the propulsion remark for the class is diesel (diesel reduction gear).

- Limitations
- Tabular official data only: dimensions, shaft horsepower, builder, prior designation, wood construction, and diesel propulsion. The table contains no materials or insulation information and says nothing about asbestos; the wood/diesel facts are relevant only as limits on era inference (no boiler or steam plant aboard).

- Finding
- LT Marty Roberts served aboard YMS-468 as Engineering Officer and later Deck Officer, 1943-1946. His account: he reported to the Gibbs shipyard, Jacksonville, FL, as part of the nucleus crew during construction; the ship commissioned at Jacksonville on 31 August 1944 (photograph caption); shakedown at Little Creek, VA, after a galley-fire diversion to Charleston; Atlantic service; Panama Canal transit after V-E Day; Pacific transit via Pearl Harbor, Johnston Island, and Majuro (crossed the International Date Line 18 June 1945); minesweeping operations off Okinawa (July 1945, 80-plus-ship echelon sweeps); ordered to Japan about ten days after the surrender, arriving off Sasebo 16 September 1945 ahead of the Makurazaki typhoon; occupation duty moored at Sasebo; in a Japanese drydock when he departed 3 January 1946; he later learned the ship swept off Korea, visited Singapore, and was sold to Turkey.

- Limitations
- A personal memoir written decades later for family, hosted on a sister-ship veterans' website - not an official record. Details beyond dates corroborated elsewhere (commissioning date, CO names Leach and Wiles, Sasebo presence in September 1945 per NavSource photographs) are uncorroborated; the Korea/Singapore epilogue is secondhand within the memoir. Contains no asbestos or materials information.

[5]Derived from the construction facts in Ships' Data 1945, Vol. III (ev-uss-yms-468-02) and NavSource specifications (ev-uss-yms-468-01); asbestos content is inference, not sourced [other_primary]

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- No asbestos product is documented aboard this hull at any level. Construction-era inference, bounded by the hull's documented characteristics: the ship is wood construction with diesel propulsion and no boilers or steam system, so the principal World War II shipboard asbestos-insulation pathway (boiler and steam-line lagging) does not apply. Any asbestos aboard would have been confined to era-typical minor applications - machinery and exhaust gaskets, valve packing, electrical insulation - which is inference only, not documentation.

- Limitations
- The cited sources document propulsion and construction material, not insulation or asbestos content; the asbestos statement is the recorder's era inference and is labeled as such. This row does not establish that asbestos was or was not present aboard, establishes no quantity, and establishes no individual exposure. Ship-specific asbestos documentation for this hull is UNKNOWN.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record was located: no DANFS entry exists for this hull; no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or government materials record naming YMS-468 was found; and no qualifying asbestos litigation naming the hull was found in CourtListener opinion or docket searches (the sole opinion hit is OCR noise in an unrelated Texas criminal appeal - a name collision, see search_ledger).

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard; it establishes only that no public ship-specific record was found in the sources searched. Deck logs, BuShips correspondence, and Turkish Navy records were not searched and remain open leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
