    vessel_history
    Finding
DANFS identifies this hull as the wooden-hulled, unnamed motor minesweeper YMS-479: laid down as PCS-1456 on 28 April 1943 at Tacoma by Mojean and Ericson Shipbuilding Corp.; reclassified as YMS-479 on 27 September 1943; launched 30 September 1943; commissioned 20 July 1944. It served in the Hawaiian chain, the Marshall Islands, and postwar Hawaii; was decommissioned 6 August 1946; named Waxbill and reclassified AMS-39 on 18 February 1947; served as a Naval Reserve training ship; operated in Korean waters and swept more than 40 mines; was reclassified AMCU-50 on 1 February 1955 and MHC-50 six days later; went out of commission in reserve 30 June 1958; and was struck from the Navy list 1 November 1959. DANFS says the ultimate fate is unknown.

    Limitations
Ship-specific history only; DANFS does not document asbestos, an ACM inventory, abatement, or a hull survey. The cited page is a verbatim transcription because the current NHHC page returned 404 on 2026-10-04.

    Finding
The live NavSource page identifies the photo subject as USS YMS-479, later Waxbill (AMS-39), and identifies the image as U.S. Navy photograph NH 79716. The related YMS index gives the type characteristics: 320-ton displacement, 136-foot length, 24-foot 6-inch beam, 6-foot 1-inch maximum draft, 12-knot designed speed, 33-person complement, and General Motors 8-268A diesel engines on two shafts.

    Limitations
NavSource is a photographic compilation and supports identity and type specifications here; it does not document asbestos aboard this hull, an exposure, or a material survey. It is not used to resolve the DANFS-stated unknown ultimate fate.

    NIOSH shipyards overview, hazards paragraph
    Finding type
    gov_survey
    Finding
NIOSH describes shipyard manufacture, repair, maintenance, and dismantling work as involving hazards including asbestos exposure. This supplies general shipyard-era occupational context for a wooden Navy minesweeper built in 1943-44, but does not identify asbestos material aboard YMS-479 or exposure of any named worker.

    Limitations
Program-level occupational-health context only. The source does not name YMS-479, Mojean and Ericson, or a specific product, quantity, location, exposure event, or remaining material; direct automated retrieval returned HTTP 403, so the official indexed page is retained as an access-limited source.

  5. [5]Authenticated CourtListener helper sweep: four required base queries, each limited to 20 results [court_record]

    search_ledger rows sl-uss-yms-479-05 through sl-uss-yms-479-08
    Finding type
    litigation_documented
    Finding
No result was returned for each required base query: exact-name opinion ("USS YMS-479"), exact-name docket ("USS YMS-479"), hull-number opinion ("YMS-479"), and hull-number docket ("YMS-479"). No asbestos-qualified variants were run because no base query overflowed its 20-result page. No qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull was located in this sweep.

    Limitations
A no-result repository sweep is not proof that no litigation exists. Results were limited to CourtListener's indexed corpus and the four required queries; no variant or repeat query was run. The helper completed all four authenticated requests without a throttle report.
