- NavSource Mine Warfare Vessel Photo Archive entry for YMS-57: laid down 5 June 1941 by Gibbs Gas Engine Co., Jacksonville, FL; launched 15 December 1941; completed 30 March 1942; in early 1946 part of a YMS flotilla that used sonar to chart the bottom of the lagoon at Bikini Atoll for positioning of ships anchored for the July 1946 atomic bomb tests; decommissioned 19 June 1946 at Subic Bay, Philippines and struck from the Naval Register; transferred to the Philippines on loan May 1948; fate unknown. Spec block: 270 t, 136 ft, 24 ft 6 in beam, 8 ft draft, 15 kts, complement 32, one 3"/50 DP mount, two 20 mm mounts, two depth-charge projectors; two General Motors 8-268A diesels (880 bhp stated), Snow and Knobstedt single-reduction gear, two shafts. Page states explicitly: 'There is no DANFS history available for YMS-57.' The uboat.net Allied Warships entry for USS YMS-57 concurs on the milestone dates and additionally records the hull ordered 1 April 1941.

- Limitations
- Compiled secondary reference (volunteer photo-archive site), not a primary record: milestones corroborated by uboat.net and shipbuilding-history tables, but the Bikini survey claim and the May 1948 Philippine loan are single-source statements not independently confirmed; 'completed' vs 'commissioned' wording differs from uboat.net; spec block engine rating (880 bhp) conflicts with other class sources. No asbestos content - supports no asbestos claim.

[3]Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships, Quest (AM-281) entry - verbatim transcription at losthistory.net/hazegray DANFS mirror (live NHHC DANFS pages for this entry return 404 - standing link-rot defect) [nhhc_danfs]

- DANFS Quest (AM-281) entry, 1946 service paragraph
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- YMS-57 is named in the DANFS entry for USS Quest (AM-281): Quest escorted YMS-431 and YMS-439 to Eniwetok and supported their minesweeping there 'in preparation for operation "Crossroads"'; then 'On 23 March Quest, in company with YMS-57 sailed for Subic Bay arriving 11 April' 1946; Quest remained at Subic until decommissioning 2 May 1946. This documents YMS-57's March-April 1946 transit from the Marshall Islands to Subic Bay alongside a fleet minesweeper engaged in Crossroads-preparation sweeping.

- Limitations
- Names this hull only as Quest's 23 March 1946 sailing companion to Subic Bay; describes Quest's operations, not YMS-57's own duties - YMS-57's wartime employment remains undocumented here. - Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA Special List #44 - 'List of Logbooks of U.S. Navy Ships, Stations, and Miscellaneous Units, 1801-1947' (ship-number ordering) inventories deck logs for YMS-57 covering 8/6/1942 to 8/31/1945 (Record Group 24, Entry 118). The hull's logbooks are not in NARA's 'Navy Deck Logs Available in the National Archives Catalog' (digitized) list - holdings are inventoried but not online.

- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- The official Composition of Joint Task Force One (NHHC Online Reading Room page, sourced to U.S. Defense Nuclear Agency, 'Operation Crossroads, 1946', Washington: DNA, 1984) does not list YMS-57 among Operation Crossroads units: the survey unit TU 1.8.5 comprised USS Bowditch (AGS-4), USS James M. Gillis (AGS-13), USS John Blish (AGS-10), YMS-354, YMS-358, YMS-413, and YP-636 only. Consistent with the NavSource claim's own scope, YMS-57's Bikini lagoon sonar charting was pre-test survey support, not participation in the test series - she departed Eniwetok for Subic Bay 23 March 1946 and decommissioned there 19 June 1946, before the 1 July Able shot.

- Precision row: prevents upgrading the NavSource Bikini-charting statement into 'Operation Crossroads participant.' The JTF-1 list documents test-organization composition; it does not disprove pre-test survey work by unattached flotilla craft, and it carries no asbestos or materials information.

- Finding
- Builder identity and yard lineage: Gibbs Gas Engine Works, Jacksonville FL, founded 1911, 'a prolific builder of both gas engines and small wooden and steel vessels, in peacetime and in both World Wars'; the yard table lists 'YMS 57 | US Navy | Minesweeper | 278d | 136 | 30-Mar-42 | Struck 1946' (yard hull no. 278). Postwar renamed Gibbs Corporation; sold to Aerojet-General Shipyards Corporation 1964; merged into Jacksonville Shipyards; closed 1992. Yard site at the east end of Prudential Drive, Jacksonville.

- Identity disambiguation: this hull (YMS-57) must not be confused with (a) USS Redpoll (AMS-57, later MSCO-57), which was built as YMS-294 - a different hull documented by its own NARA muster-roll file unit NAID 99924265; or (b) BYMS-57, a British lend-lease motor minesweeper built by Westergard Boat Works, Biloxi MS, completed 22 July 1943, struck 1948 and transferred to Greek Customs service - likewise a different hull.

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Peer-reviewed historical study documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding during WWII - the era and program under which this 1941-42 wooden-hulled motor minesweeper was built. For a diesel-powered wooden craft, era-consistent asbestos applications would be engine and exhaust lagging, machinery gaskets, valve packing, electrical insulation, and fireproofing rather than the boiler/steam-system lagging typical of larger combatants.

- Population
- WWII shipyard workers and ship crews (era context)
- Limitations
- Program/era-level scholarship - does not name this vessel or its class and establishes nothing about materials aboard this hull; the narrowed application list for a wooden diesel craft is analytical framing, not documented fact for YMS-57. Does not establish quantity, presence, exposure, or causation.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, veteran claim documentation, or docketed case naming YMS-57 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The hull left U.S. custody in 1946 and its post-1948 fate is undocumented - no scrapping or museum phase exists at which a modern hazmat record would likely have been generated.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1941-42 naval build is era-consistent with asbestos-containing materials, and the hull's undocumented Philippine disposition closes off no exposure history. Does not establish presence or absence; does not establish or defeat any exposure claim or legal eligibility.
