Identity and service record for this hull: YMS-1 class auxiliary motor minesweeper laid down 3 January 1942 by the Gibbs Gas Engine Co., Jacksonville, FL; launched 25 March 1942; completed 24 June 1942; transferred to France 18 October 1944 as Jonquille (D 336); sold to France 21 March 1949; struck from the Navy Register 28 April 1949; reclassified D-20 and M-660 in French service; decommissioned 16 November 1964; fate unknown. Specifications block: displacement 270 t; length 136'; beam 24'6"; draft 8'; speed 15 kts; complement 32; armament one 3"/50 dual-purpose mount, two 20 mm mounts, two depth-charge projectors; propulsion two 880 bhp General Motors 8-268A diesel engines, Snow and Knobstedt single reduction gear, two shafts. The page states 'YMS-64 served the Navies of the United States and France' and 'There is no DANFS history available for YMS-64.' Photographs document the hull under construction c. April 1942 alongside YMS-65 (Library of Congress photo 8b03715r) and in French service as Jonquille on 17 April 1946.

    Limitations
NavSource is a private archival compilation of official Navy data, not a government publication; no DANFS entry exists for this hull (NHHC page 404s; NavSource states no history record is available), so narrative details rest on this compilation. The page records 'Completed, 24 June 1942' rather than a commissioning date - consistent with YMS craft commonly placed in service rather than commissioned, though uboat.net lists 'Commissioned 24 Jun 1942'. Its '880bhp' per-engine rating conflicts with the official BuShips class figure of 1,000 shp - flagged in gaps. Contains no asbestos information and supports no asbestos claim.

Official Navy characteristics-register rows and transfer table: BuShips 'Ships' Data, U.S. Naval Vessels, 1945,' Vol. III (NAVSHIPS 250-012) documents the YMS class table at p. 536-538 - 'Wood construction' footnote; 136'0" length x 24'6" breadth; 1,000 shaft horsepower; 'Diesel reduction' remark - with the Gibbs Gas Engine Co., Jacksonville, Fla. yard listed against the YMS 54-65 block (YMS 54, 56, 57, 59, 60, 61, 65 appear in the register; YMS 62, 63, 64 are absent from the in-register table because they were already transferred to France). The register's 'Vessels Transferred to Foreign Governments - Transferred to France' table at p. 629-630 records YMS64, type 'Motor minesweeper,' date transferred '18 Oct. 1944.'

Official BuShips publication - the strongest available official source for this hull's transfer and class characteristics. The 1945 register records characteristics and the transfer event, not construction dates, service history, or materials composition; it does not record the French name Jonquille. Contains no asbestos information and supports no asbestos claim.

NARA Special List #44 (Navy deck-log finding aid, indexed by ship number) lists YMS-64 deck logs held at the National Archives covering 7/4/1942 through 10/18/1944 - beginning ten days after the documented completion date and ending on the documented date of transfer to France. The index coverage therefore brackets the hull's entire U.S. Navy service period.

Finding aid only - the deck logs themselves were not retrieved or read, and their contents (stations, operations, any material/conditions notes) are unknown. Coverage dates are index coverage, not asserted commissioning/decommissioning dates; the 4 July 1942 start is ten days after the documented 24 June 1942 completion. Not an asbestos record.

Official awards register listing for this hull: NAVPERS 15,790 (Rev. 1953), 'Navy and Marine Corps Awards Manual,' Part IV section 2(16) (Area Campaign Medals, World War II - authorized operations and engagements, European-African-Middle Eastern Area) lists YMS 64 with four engagement-star eligibility entries: '9 July 43 - 15 Jul 43, E2' (Sicilian occupation); '9 Sep 43 - 21 Sep 43, E3' (Salerno landings); '20 Feb 44 - 1 Mar 44, E4-1' (Anzio-Nettuno advanced landings); '15 Aug 44 - 25 Sep 44, E7' (Invasion of Southern France). Official awards-eligibility listing - documents that the ship qualified for engagement stars in the named operations within the stated date windows, not a narrative of her movements between them; day-to-day operations Jun 1942-Jun 1943 (pre-Sicily) and Oct 1944 remain undocumented in the sources searched. Finding
Identity and collision notes: (a) BYMS-64 is a different hull in a different designation series - a British Lend-Lease minesweeper built by Westergard Boat Works, Biloxi MS, transferred to the United Kingdom 22 November 1943 (recorded in the same official BuShips 1945 register's 'Transferred to United Kingdom' table and in shipbuildinghistory's yard-minesweeper table; returned 1947). (b) The French name Jonquille was reused: a later Marine Nationale minesweeper Jonquille - ex-MSI-69 Sulham, hull M787, a Ham-class MSI built 1954 by Fairlie Yacht and Co. for France under the Mutual Assistance Pact, named Jonquille by decree of 22 February 1964 (the year M660 decommissioned), renumbered P787 in 1973 and transferred to the Gendarmerie in March 1974 - is a different vessel and must not be merged with the ex-YMS-64 Jonquille (D 336/D 20/M 660). French mine-warfare pennant rosters list D.336 = Jonquille, corroborating NavSource's identification.

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
Design-level asbestos-relevance inference for this hull type: the YMS-1 class was a wood-construction motor minesweeper of 136 ft powered by twin diesel engines with no boilers and no steam plant (documented in the official BuShips Ships' Data 1945 class table: wood construction, 1,000 shp, diesel reduction), so the dominant WWII naval-asbestos pathways (boiler insulation, turbine lagging, steam-line lagging) do not apply. Asbestos-relevant applications for a 1942 naval auxiliary of this type are limited to era-typical items: diesel exhaust-system lagging, engine gaskets and packing, electrical insulation/switchboard backing, deck-covering and non-skid compounds, adhesives/mastics, and friction linings on deck machinery.

The wood-hull diesel platform is officially documented for the type; the list of asbestos-relevant applications is era inference, not documentation - no material survey, specification, or maintenance record names asbestos aboard this hull. Finding type

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, museum material record, or government report names this hull, and no DANFS entry exists. The hull was transferred to France in 1944, sold outright in 1949, and decommissioned by France in 1964 with fate unknown - there is no surviving structure, museum custody, or reserve-fleet record from which a survey could be expected. CourtListener litigation searches were run through the authenticated helper on the four base forms for this numbered hull: 'YMS-64' opinion, 'YMS-64' docket, and 'YMS 64' opinion each returned count 0 (no case naming the hull in the index); the 'YMS 64' docket query could not be executed - the fleet-wide shared pacing budget was spent on repeated attempts across the session, so docket coverage for the space-variant form is unverified rather than confirmed negative.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era-consistent materials could have been present during her US or French service. Litigation coverage is incomplete: three of four base CourtListener queries returned zero, but the 'YMS 64' docket search was deferred by fleet pacing (shared ~58/hr budget) after repeated attempts and remains an open check; zero results in any event confirm only no indexed case names the hull, not the absence of unindexed or non-digitized litigation. Does not establish presence or absence; does not establish or defeat any exposure claim or legal eligibility.
