- Finding
- YMS-88, a YMS-1-class auxiliary motor minesweeper, was laid down 20 June 1941 by Hubbard's South Coast Co., Newport Beach, CA; launched 18 October 1941; completed 5 May 1942; commissioned USS YMS-88. She 'served the Navies of the United States and the Soviet Union': transferred to the Soviet Union 27 August 1945 and reclassified T-608; reported 'Scrapped.' Specifications listed: 270 t displacement, 136 ft length, 24 ft 6 in beam, 6 ft 1 in draft, 13 kt speed, complement 33; armament one 3"/50 dual-purpose mount, two 20 mm mounts, two depth-charge projectors and two depth-charge tracks; propulsion two 800 bhp General Motors 8-268A diesel engines through a Snow and Knobstedt single-reduction gear on two shafts. Call sign NUPA. Commanding officers listed for 1945: LTJG H. E. Dysart, USNR and LTJG W. R. Holmes, USNR. NavSource states no DANFS history exists for this vessel; one National Archives photograph of the hull is archived (source credit Tommy Trampp).

- Crew of ~33 (class standard) during 1942-1945 U.S. service; Soviet crew after transfer
- Limitations
- Establishes identity, construction milestones, disposition to Soviet service, and class specifications. Contains no asbestos or materials information; 'Scrapped' carries no date or place. 'Completed' vs 'Commissioned' wording differs from uboat.net, and the muster roll's 4 May 1942 commissioning statement conflicts with the 5 May secondary consensus - see gaps.

- Finding
- NARA holds this hull's personnel record: RG 24 (Bureau of Naval Personnel) muster-roll file unit 'YMS-88, 5/4/42-7/31/45' (NAID 192924225, Container Roll 8052, 110 digitized images via Ancestry partnership). READ AT IMAGE LEVEL: the first roll page is headed 'MUSTER ROLL OF THE CREW of the U.S.S. YMS-88' and states 'DATE OF COMMISSIONING 4 May 1942' (N.Nav.6-4 form); the page-1 roster lists 26 enlisted names (BM2c, Sea1c, MM1c, EM2c, GM2c, MoMM2c, SM2c, QM3c, Y2c, Matt3c, RM2c, F1c, Flc ratings) each 'first received on board' 5-2-42. The unit documents continuous personnel accounting from commissioning week through 31 July 1945.

- All hands mustered aboard, 1942-05-04 through 1945-07-31 (~33-man crew; 26 names on the first roster page)
- Limitations
- Primary source - the ship's own personnel record, verified to be YMS-88's (typed header names the hull). Record existence verified and cover/roster read; the daily detail of the remaining ~109 images was not extracted this session. The roll's stated commissioning date (4 May 1942) conflicts with the 5 May 1942 consensus of NavSource/uboat.net/ShipbuildingHistory - carried in gaps. Muster rolls record personnel, not operations; underway history and station detail remain unextracted.

[4]NARA, Record Group 38 (Office of the Chief of Naval Operations), WWII War Diaries series (NAID 4697018), file unit NAID 134092664 - mistitled 'USS YMS-88 - War Diary, 1/21-31/43'; actual content is USS YMS-87's deck log, verified at image level 2026-10-05; companion unit NAID 134092629 (YMS-87, 1/1-20/43) verified at catalog level [other_primary]

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- CORRECTION: the NARA file unit cataloged as 'USS YMS-88 - War Diary, 1/21-31/43' (RG 38 WWII War Diaries series, NAID 134092664, micro serial 46777, Roll A237, 21 images) does not contain YMS-88's records. READ AT IMAGE LEVEL: the N.Pers.880 'DECK LOG BOOK' cover is handwritten 'U.S.S. YMS 87' for 'January (21-31) 1943,' and every interior page header reads 'UNITED STATES SHIP YMS 87' (the 8 and 7 are written in distinctly different digits on both cover and headers - unambiguous). The log places YMS-87 at Section Base Santa Barbara, California, moored port-side to the dock receiving auxiliary power from USS YMS-116, then underway for minesweeping and patrol operations in company with YMS-116 - consistent with YMS-87's documented Southern California construction (Al Larson Boat Shop, Terminal Island). The catalog holds the companion piece under the correct number: 'USS YMS-87 - War Diary, 1/1-20/43' (NAID 134092629, adjacent serial) - i.e., the second half of YMS-87's January 1943 deck log was split off and mistitled under YMS-88 during microfilming. No authentic YMS-88 deck-log or war-diary file unit was located in the catalog.

- Limitations
- Corrects a cataloging misattribution, not an asbestos claim: researchers pulling 'the YMS-88 war diary' would receive another hull's log - YMS-87's January 21-31, 1943 deck-log submission. The misfiled log itself is a genuine primary document for YMS-87, not evidence about YMS-88's operations. Whether YMS-88's own wartime deck-log submissions survive elsewhere in the series (perhaps under another mistitle) is unverified - open archival lead.

The yard history states South Coast Shipyard (started in the late 1930s by Walton Hubbard, at 2300 Newport Boulevard) closed in 1963; the same table shows the yard's WWII minesweeper program (YMS 88-93 and 259-264 et al.).

- Finding type

- Finding
- NHHC's DANFS history of USS Capable (AM-155) documents the Project Hula transfer mechanism this hull went through: the secret program approved by Fleet Adm. Ernest J. King on 18 January 1945 to transfer U.S. naval vessels to the Soviet Union at Fort Randall, Cold Bay, in preparation for Soviet entry into the Pacific war; U.S. crews trained Soviet replacement crews aboard at Cold Bay, after which each ship was decommissioned from the U.S. Navy and commissioned into the Soviet Navy, redesignated tralshik ('minesweeper') with a T- number. YMS-88's 27 August 1945 transfer as T-608 falls inside this program's documented window (program ran at Cold Bay through early September 1945; the Wikipedia Project Hula roster - background only - lists YMS-88 in the 27 August 1945 transfer group with YMS-135, YMS-180, YMS-285, and YMS-332).

- Finding
- Peer-reviewed historical research documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding during World War II - the program and era under which this 1941-1942 wooden minesweeper was built - and that wartime demand drove unprecedented asbestos utilization aboard naval and merchant-type hulls.

- Limitations
- Program/era-level scholarly documentation of asbestos use in WWII shipbuilding generally; does not name this vessel, the YMS-1 class, or small wooden combatant craft. Does not establish that asbestos was or remains aboard this hull, nor quantity, location, condition, exposure, or causation. Wooden-hulled diesel-powered craft carried a materially smaller asbestos-relevant plant than steam-driven steel hulls.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, museum record, or docketed case naming YMS-88 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). NavSource confirms no DANFS entry exists for this hull; the vessel predates the Naval Vessel Register; no class profile exists in the Atlas class dataset. Additionally, the only cataloged 'YMS-88' operational record at NARA proved at image level to be a misattributed YMS-87 document (see ev-04) - authentic ship-level operational records for this hull located so far are limited to the RG 24 muster rolls.
