    Finding
NARA Special List 44 inventories TWO logbooks for YMS-95 (RG 24, Bureau of Naval Personnel records, National Archives at College Park): 3/12/1942 - 6/30/1944 and 8/1/1944 - 6/30/1945. Coverage opens on her completion/commissioning date (12 March 1942) and runs through the opening weeks of the Balikpapan minesweep - there is a one-month coverage gap (July 1944) between the two volumes. These are log-coverage dates, not asserted commissioning/decommissioning dates. YMS-95 does not appear on NARA's list of digitized deck logs in the National Archives Catalog (the digitized YMS entries are the hulls later named under the AMS/MSCO program); the logs are an undigitized primary record of her whole career.

Inventory listing only - establishes that deck logs exist and their date coverage, not their content. Log coverage is not proof of commissioning/decommissioning dates. The deck logs themselves are undigitized (not on the NARA online list); no page-level content reviewed this session. The July 1944 gap may be a missing volume or a split in shelving - not resolved.

uboat.net data block: built by Colberg Boat Works (Stockton, CA); ordered 1 April 1941; laid down 6 June 1941; launched 16 December 1941; commissioned 12 March 1942; stricken 19 June 1946. One operation names this hull: Operation Oboe II, the Allied landings at Balikpapan, Borneo - the last major amphibious assault of WWII. YMS-95, commanded by Lt.(jg) G.E. Newby, Jr., USNR, was one of 26 YMS minesweepers in the minesweeping task unit (TU 78.2.92 under Lt.Cdr. D.W. Blakeslee, USNR, part of TG 78.2.9). The 'A' echelon - including YMS-95 - departed Morotai 11 June 1945 ('Fox' day-20), reached the 100-fathom curve off Balikpapan 0642/15 June and began sweeping approach tracks for moored and acoustic mines. For sixteen days the YMS unit swept under repeated Japanese shore-battery fire; three sister sweepers were sunk by mines and four more damaged (YMS-50, YMS-39, YMS-365 sunk; YMS-368, YMS-335, YMS-47, YMS-314 damaged) before the 1 July landings. By 'Fox' day the unit had swept 15 Allied influence mines and 13 enemy moored contact mines.

    Limitations
uboat.net is a specialist secondary database compiling official action-report/war-diary material - the task-group rosters and sweep log transcribe Navy operational reports, but this record relies on the compilation, not the underlying document images. The transcript attributes mine counts and casualties to the unit, not to YMS-95 individually; YMS-95 is never named as damaged or as having swept a specific mine. No asbestos or material content.

    Finding
The builder's production table lists YMS-95: US Navy minesweeper, 278 tons deadweight, 136 feet, delivered 12-Mar-42, disposition 'Struck 1946'. Colberg Boat Works was started in 1896 by three brothers and survived into the 1990s; the yard sat immediately east of Stephens Bros. at 848 West Fremont Street - Stocktonia News records that Stephens Brothers launched its first war vessel on 15 December 1941 and Colberg completed an identical ship the next day, and that 'the first two boats were the YMS 94 and YMS 95' - NavSource's 16 December 1941 launch date identifies YMS-95 as the Colberg hull. The two yards later merged as Stephens-Colberg Yards. Colberg also built sisters YMS-97, -99, -383 through -388 and later the Agile-class ocean minesweepers.

Nevins, Inc., City Island, NY. YMS-95 belongs to the Mk I two-stack production group (YMS-1 through 134). Class-level specifications: length overall 136', extreme beam 24'6", displacement 320 tons, max draft 6'1", complement 33, one 3"/50 dual-purpose mount and two 20mm mounts, designed speed 12 knots, General Motors 8-268A diesel engines on two shafts, designed shaft horsepower 880. Surviving YMS were reclassified AMS and given bird names in 1947 - YMS-95, struck June 1946 and disposed overseas, never received one.

    Finding
A wood-hulled, diesel-driven minesweeper delivered in March 1942 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. Era-standard applications on a small wooden diesel combatant of this type and period were diesel-exhaust and muffler lagging, engine-room thermal/acoustic insulation, machinery gaskets and valve packing, and electrical insulation. As a diesel craft she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply - and her wood hull and small machinery spaces imply a substantially smaller insulation footprint than a steam combatant.

No quantity, no manufacturer attribution, no ship-proven presence. The small craft's reduced systems footprint makes the inference weaker than for steam-powered hulls of the same era.
