  8. [8]NHHC/National Museum of the U.S. Navy, YMS-445 exhibit page (class description: 'These yard craft patrolled navy yards and adjacent areas, and they were also used by the Allies as part of the Lend-Lease Program'); NHHC ship-history page for YMS-96 returns 404 [nhhc_danfs]

    vessel_history
    Finding
NHHC describes the YMS type as yard craft that patrolled navy yards and adjacent areas and served Allies under Lend-Lease; YMS-445 was the last YMS ordered for WWII. NavSource class index adds: 561 built at 35 yacht yards; wooden hull; YMS-1 through YMS-134 (which includes this hull) carried two stacks; surviving YMS reclassified AMS and named in 1947. No DANFS entry exists for YMS-96 - the NHHC history page for this hull returns 404, normal for unnamed yard minesweepers.

    asbestos_application
    Finding
Era inference: a wooden-hulled, diesel-powered motor minesweeper completed April 1942 carried no boilers or steam lines, so the period-standard asbestos applications aboard were narrower than on steam vessels - diesel exhaust lagging, machinery insulation, gaskets and valve packing, electrical insulation, and interior finishes/deck coverings. Asbestos was a routine Navy insulating and gasket material throughout the 1941-45 construction window.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, shipyard work package, museum hazmat disclosure, or adjudicated litigation naming YMS-96 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The hull was scrapped in 1946 - no post-service abatement or preservation record would be expected.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard. CourtListener coverage is partial this session (fleet pacing) - the exact-name opinion and hull-number docket searches ran with zero results; the two remaining base queries are logged pending, not claimed as negatives. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
