- Finding
- Official post-storm accounting naming this hull: Appendix III, 'Typhoon Damage at Okinawa (Based Upon Progress Reports to 19 November),' lists 'YMS 99 - Refloated 11/2/45.' The report documents that the sudden storm shift caught ships in the supposedly safe shelter of Buckner Bay (Nakagusuku Wan); that 12 ships and craft were sunk, 222 grounded, and 32 damaged beyond ships' companies' ability to repair; personnel casualties 36 dead, 47 missing, ~100 seriously injured; and that of some 90 ships needing major work ComServPac judged only 10 worth complete salvage, with badly damaged vessels decommissioned, stripped, and abandoned - the disposition path consistent with this hull's striking and destruction.

- Crew aboard during grounding and post-storm salvage period (Oct-Nov 1945); ComServDiv 104 salvage workforce
- Limitations
- Ship-specific for the refloat line only: the appendix names YMS 99 and records 'Refloated 11/2/45' but does not itemize her individual damage, grounding location within the bay, casualties aboard, or the salvage decision applied to her. The narrative figures (12 sunk / 222 grounded / 32 severely damaged) are fleet-level, not YMS-99-specific. Contains no asbestos or material content. NavSource's 'grounded 9 October' detail is consistent with but not stated in this appendix line.

- Finding
- NARA inventories US Navy logbooks for YMS-99 covering 27 April 1942 through 30 September 1945 - the logbook run begins on her completion/commissioning date and ends nine days before the Typhoon Louise grounding. The logs are held in paper form in RG 24; this hull's logbooks are not among the digitized deck logs listed on the NARA '1941 and later' online inventory (checked 2026-10-05). These logs are the primary lead for her undocumented 1942-45 service track.

- Finding
- Class documentation for the type: YMS-1-class auxiliary motor minesweepers were wood-hulled vessels designed by Henry B. Nevins, Inc. and built at 35 yacht yards (12 East Coast, 19 West Coast, four Great Lakes); 561 hulls of the 136-ft type were produced 1942-1945. YMS-1 through YMS-134 had two stacks (Mark I), placing YMS-99 in the twin-stack group. The wooden construction was specific to the minesweeping mission (reduced magnetic signature). Surviving YMS hulls were reclassified AMS and named in 1947 - YMS-99, destroyed in 1945-46, never received a name.

- Finding
- A wood-hulled, diesel-powered minesweeper completed April 1942 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. Era-standard asbestos applications aboard a small diesel craft of this period were diesel exhaust lagging, machinery and piping gaskets, valve packing, electrical insulation, and deck/covering compounds. Because she carried no boilers or steam system, the heavy lagging pathways of steam vessels (boiler casings, steam drums, long steam runs) do not apply; the wooden hull likewise carried less thermal insulation than steel combatants. The exposure pathway that remains is concentrated in the engine spaces and fittings.

Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials; the reduced-scope claim (no steam plant, wood hull) is itself an inference from type design, not a survey finding. No quantity; no manufacturer attribution.

- The builder yard has a documented hazardous-substance cleanup record: EPA lists Colberg Boat Works as a non-NPL CERCLA site under state-lead cleanup; DTSC EnviroStor records an 18-acre voluntary-agreement site whose past uses include 'SHIPYARD - SHIP BUILDING/REPAIR' and wartime naval shipbuilding, with potential contaminants of concern listed as metals, petroleum, organochlorine pesticides, SVOCs, VOCs and 'other'; the site narrative records petroleum fuels, MTBE and metals in soil and groundwater, and 1990 California DFG findings of sandblasting paint waste (copper, lead, nickel, zinc) in sediment. - Finding
- Builder-context documentation: 'The first local shipbuilding operations were assigned in 1940 to Colberg Boat Works and Stephens Brothers, a joint contract for construction of six-yard mine sweepers' - the joint contract under which the Stockton YMS block (YMS-94 through YMS-99) was built, corroborating the joint 'Colberg Boat Works and Stephen Brothers' attribution in NavSource and 'Stephens Bros./Colberg BW' in shipbuildinghistory. Colberg built some 45 vessels at a cost of more than $20 million and had 1,205 workers by 1945; Stephens Brothers had 460 employees.

No DANFS entry exists for this hull (NavSource). The secondary web sweep surfaced no qualifying case and no law-firm 'asbestos ship' listicle content for this hull. The litigation repository check is a genuine open gap (throttled, not run). NARA deck logs (Apr 1942-Sep 1945) are an undigitized lead for daily-activity detail.
