DE-668 laid down 22 Aug 1943 'at Orange, Tex., by the Consolidated Steel Co.' (builder attribution conflicts with NavSource/CO history - carried in gaps); launched 27 Nov 1943, sponsored by Mrs. Charlotte Yokes (namesake's widow); reclassified DE-668 to APD-69 on 27 Jun 1944; commissioned 18 Dec 1944, Lt. - DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. - Dravo Pittsburgh and Consolidated Steel Orange construction trades 1943-44; commissioned crew 1944-46; embarked UDT-28 and troops
- Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer-compiled naval-history archive, not a government publication; dates cross-checked against DANFS where overlapping (all agree). The Dravo-laid-down sequence, the 1965 sale date, and the full propulsion spec appear only in this compilation - DANFS instead attributes the entire build to Consolidated Steel at Orange; conflict carried in gaps. Buyer name rendered 'National Metals and Steel Co.(NASSCO)' here vs. 'National Metal & Steel Corp.' in DANFS - logged in gaps. The Combustion Engineering boiler attribution conflicts with the Buckley class-profile block map (which assigns Foster Wheeler to Dravo-block sisters DE-665-667) - NavSource ship-specific spec carried; flagged in gaps.

[4]Warfield, LCDR Paul E., USNR (first commanding officer), 'A History of USS Yokes' - privately printed April 1946 'for the officers and crew of the U.S.S. Yokes'; contributed by George Weed; scanned PDF hosted on NavSource [other_primary]

- Finding
- Contemporaneous ship's history written by her first CO (April 1946) documents this hull's construction sequence and yard periods in his own words: 'THE U.S.S. YOKES was built as a Destroyer Escort at Pittsburgh, Pa. The hull, with most of the machinery was towed down the Mississippi River and to Orange, Texas, where she was completed by the Consolidated Steel Company as a High Speed Transport (APD-69).' Nucleus crew assembled early Oct 1944 at Receiving Station, Orange; balance at Training Station Norfolk 20 Oct 1944; Bermuda shakedown; amphibious training at Cove Point, Md.; 'time in the Norfolk yard, doing post shakedown repairs and alterations'; escorted USS Duchess from Newport, R.I., to the Panama Canal; further gunnery/amphibious training San Diego; after Okinawa and Guam, 'we arrived at Oceanside, and went to the yard in San Pedro for overhaul. Most of the crew got leave. In Pedro we got the news that the War was over.' Warfield relieved by LCDR George H. Weed USNR at Oceanside on completion of the overhaul.

- Commissioned crew 1944-46 (as observed by the CO); Norfolk yard and San Pedro yard workforces during availabilities
- Limitations
- Primary contemporaneous narrative by the commanding officer, but a commemorative privately-printed booklet, not an official record - dates are not stated at day precision for most events, and the OCR scan layer is imperfect ('HE U.S.S. YOKES', 'Prioately printed'). Its Pittsburgh-build statement corroborates NavSource against DANFS's Consolidated attribution; it does not name Dravo Corp. The San Pedro yard is identified as Western Pipe and Steel Co. by DANFS, not by this document. No asbestos or materials content.

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Era documentation of the material regime under which this hull was built and converted (1943-44): the USPHS/Navy-sanctioned survey of pipe-covering operations in four Navy-connected shipyards states that 'an important ingredient of pipe covering material used on U.S. Navy vessels is amosite' (a South African amphibole asbestos) and documents shipyard pipe-coverer exposure conditions during naval-vessel construction. A turbo-electric Charles Lawrence-class transport (two Combustion Engineering 'D' Express boilers per NavSource, GE turbine-generators) built and converted at wartime commercial yards would have carried period-standard asbestos applications: boiler and steam-line insulation, turbine lagging, gaskets, packing, bulkhead insulation, deck coverings, brake linings.

- Navy-contract-yard pipe coverers and construction trades, WWII era (class context)
- Limitations
- Class/era and builder-era inference only - NOT a hull-specific finding. The study anonymized its four surveyed yards (A-D); neither Dravo-Pittsburgh nor Consolidated-Orange can be identified as a survey site from the published paper. Does not establish that asbestos was installed aboard this hull, in what quantity, or that any individual aboard was exposed. The study's exposure conclusions are disputed in modern literature; it is cited here only for the material fact of amosite use on Navy vessels of the era.

- Finding type

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located for DE-668/APD-69: no hull ACM survey, no abatement contract, no museum or custodian hazmat disclosure (ship scrapped 1965), and no published opinion names the vessel ('USS Yokes' exact-name opinion search returned zero hits). The Buckley class profile likewise records no ship-specific asbestos record for any class member.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1943-44 steam-driven naval vessel was built in the peak asbestos-shipbuilding era, but whether ACM was installed aboard this hull is not ship-proven. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

Remaining queries deferred under fleet CourtListener pacing and logged in the search ledger: 'USS Yokes'/'Yokes' dockets (type=r), 'DE-668' and 'APD-69' opinion and docket queries, and the surname-collision variant 'Yokes' (a person's surname and a steering-hardware term also match the string).

- Partially enumerated: the exact-name opinion sweep is complete (zero hits); docket-level and hull-number sweeps were still deferred when the fleet pacing window closed - logged as gaps rather than guessed. 'DE-668' and 'APD-69' strings typically match document/entry numbers or agency identifiers in dockets, not vessels; unenumerated.
