The record
In July 2024 IARC classified talc as probably carcinogenic to humans (Group 2A), covering perineal use of talc-based body powder, announced in a Lancet Oncology news item (PMID 38976996) and detailed in IARC's Q&A for Monograph Volume 136 (July 5, 2024). The Q&A records the Working Group's own caveat that a causal association 'could not be fully established because the increase could potentially be explained by contamination of the talc with asbestos (which has been documented) or by biases arising from the studies' methodology.'

What this source does not establish
The PubMed record for the Lancet notice is a 'News' article type without an abstract; the IARC Q&A is the stronger citable instrument and is now the primary citation. The classification reflects hazard, not the risk level of any specific exposure, and the Working Group itself notes the asbestos-contamination and bias caveats — these must travel with the classification whenever it is cited.
