The record
A 1991 peer-reviewed study examined pharmaceutical and cosmetic-grade talcs for asbestiform amphibole content using a density-optical method and found only one containing an amphibole particle size distribution typical of asbestos.
Claim scope
Independent peer-reviewed confirmation that Alice Blount — the mineralogist named in the Ingham 1998 internal letter and in Bader — published on this subject in 1991 in a PubMed-indexed journal. Bader states: “in 1991, Alice Blount, Ph.D., documented trace levels of tremolite asbestos in samples of JBP sourced from the Vermont mines in a peer- reviewed and published paper.” The paper exists and its abstract is consistent with a trace finding.
What this source does not establish
IMPORTANT COUNTERBALANCE: the abstract does NOT name Johnson's Baby Powder or Vermont, and it states all talcs were well below the OSHA industrial limit with only ONE showing a distribution typical of asbestos. Bader's characterisation is narrower than the paper reads. Do NOT write 'Blount 1991 found asbestos in Johnson's Baby Powder' on the authority of this PMID; that attribution comes from the opinion, and the paper's own abstract emphasises below-limit results.
Limitations
Cite the PMID for the study's existence and abstract findings; cite Bader separately for the JBP/Vermont attribution, and note the two do not say the same thing. Full text not retrieved.
